Trae Young is an undeniable offensive talent. But he’s also considered by some to be a defensive liability, and his erratic shoot-first mentality for a point guard doesn’t mesh with all coaches and systems.

The Atlanta Hawks finished No. 10 in the Eastern Conference and were knocked out of the Play-In Tournament. Young was the target of much trade speculation last off-season, and after another Hawks year of unmet expectations, he’s likely to be on the block again.

Bookies.com veteran oddsmaker Adam Thompson has now updated his NBA future odds on where Young plays for the 2024-25 season.

Trae Young's Potential Destinations For The 2024-25 NBA Season

Statistically, Young is a 6-foot-1 powerhouse. He averaged 25.7 ppg, which was down nearly four points from his career-best, but his 10.8 assists and 1.3 steals per game ranked as his highest.

However, he shot 43.6% from the floor, 35.5% on 3-pointers, and played a career-low 54 games due mostly to a hand injury.

Defensively, the Hawks were historically worse with Young on the floor. This season, the team was 22-33 when he played and 14-14 when he didn’t. The same could be said for fellow Hawks star Dejounte Murray. The Hawks were thoroughly outscored with both of them on the court and had a positive net rating with just one of them.

Murray is under contract through 2027-28 at nearly half the cost of Young, who has two more years on his contract, with a massive cap hit for $43 million and $46 million in those seasons. A change of scenery could flip the scripts for both the Hawks and for Young.

It’s also possible the Hawks decide to keep Young, or they simply cannot find a suitable trade partner. Young indicated on a podcast that he's in a spot of his career that while he wants to remain in Atlanta, he wins to win now

The San Antonio Spurs could use a perimeter go-to to take pressure off budding 7-foot-4 star Victor Wembanyama. Young would be a huge upgrade on the offensive end to PG Tre Jones (10 ppg). The Spurs reportedly inquired about Young at the trade deadline.

The Los Angeles Lakers appear to be another team seriously considering acquiring Young if they can make it work with a dire cap situation. The Lakers are expected to be aggressive as the clock ticks on aging superstars LeBron James and Anthony Davis. It's win-now time.

Other teams seeking a scoring punch and a charismatic presence could see Young as a step in the right direction.

Teams including the Washington Wizards, could use an upgrade from Tyus Jones (12 ppg). The Brooklyn Nets have Dennis Schroder and Ben Simmons, but neither is likely the answer in the long term.

Other teams that may not need a point guard but could use a surge of excitement, including the Detroit Pistons and Charlotte Hornets, could inquire. The Pistons have the most projected cap space for the off-season, and the Hornets rank seventh.

Keep in mind, while Young doesn't have a no-trade clause, the thought is if Young strongly wants to remain in Atlanta, that's likely where he is for opening night 2024.

Some teams seem to stock up on stars, whether or not they can afford it is another matter. That includes the Los Angeles Clippers
