Defi Du Seuil among 2018 Champion Hurdle favourites after impressive win in Triumph Hurdle
Phillip Hobbs cut a relieved and delighted figure on Friday 17 March after seeing his stable superstar Defi Du Seuil hose up in the Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.
The horse ran brilliantly and was on the bridle for most of the race before Richard Johnson steered him up the Cheltenham hill to win in style.
The bookmakers reacted by cutting the odds on Defi Du Seuil winning the 2018 Champion Hurdle and Paddy Power are currently offering 20/1 although bet365 go much shorter at 10/1 after such an impressive performance.
Phillip Hobbs intimated that the horse could yet be pitched into battle in the Arkle instead, although perhaps another year of hurdling could be on the cards and that’s why the bookies are slashing his price.
BetVictor are as short as 6/1 about Defi Du Seuil, with the horse having barely put a foot wrong during the 2016/17 season and it appears as though he will have a strong chance in the Champion Hurdle.
Buveur D’air is the 5/1 favourite and the Nicky Henderson horse is likely to be back for another bite of the cherry after triumphing at the 2017 Festival.
He clearly acts at this course, having finished third behind Altior and Min at the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, with Faugheen as big as 10/1 with Coral although it will have been three years since the Mullins horse triumphed in this race.
Annie Power probably makes appeal at 16/1 (Ladbrokes) and that could be a knocking price considering that the mare won the race in 2016 and will have a mares’ allowance for this race.
On that front, Apples Jade would not be without her chances, while Labaik is an interesting shout at odds of 16/1 and the Gordon Elliott poke bolted up in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.
All odds were correct at time of posting.
