Early Look at 2019-20 Race
The horse race between the nation’s two preeminent programs is also reflected in the split among early top 25 polls for next season, with some having the Crimson Tide on top and others positioning Clemson Clemson as No. 1.
The Tide and Tigers have now played for the national championship three times in the past four seasons, with Clemson winning two of those contests.
While Clemson loses much of a defensive front that was the best in the nation, the Tigers return rising sophomore quarterback Trevor Lawrence, rising sophomore receiver Justyn Ross, rising junior running back Travis Etienne and a host of other potent skill position players.
Alabama returns rising junior quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, rising junior receiver Jerry Jeudy and rising junior nose tackle Quinnen Williams, among other anchors of this year’s team.
Tagovailoa and Lawrence are also widely considered the frontrunners for the 2019 Heisman Trophy.
