Bookies hoping to get Getabird and Footpad beaten to avoid massive Cheltenham liabilities
We’re just days away from the 2018 Cheltenham Festival, with the meeting kicking off on Tuesday 13 March and Day One of the meeting has several highly-fancied favourites.
In the past, the bookies have built up massive liabilities about the Willie Mullins horses and it could be the same this time around, with Getabird the well fancied favourite to win the opening race of the meeting.
Bet365 offer 6/4 about the Irish raider winning the Supreme, with Kalashnikov next in the betting on the proviso that Samcro is rerouted to the Ballymore, with the punters hoping to get off to a winning start.
If Getabird wins the opener, then there will be some big bets going on Footpad, with the horse having shown some fantastic improvement over fences this season and bet365 have 11/8 about the Mullins horse claiming the spoils.
The soft ground should be to the horse’s favour, although Petit Mouchoir has been backed in recent days and is now trading at 9/4, with Saint Calvados having also come short and that horse is trading at 10/3.
The bookies will have hoped to get one of the two favourites beaten in the Supreme and Arkle, although the Champion Hurdle looks like a race where it’s hard to bet against the jolly.
Buveur D’air is a 1/2 chance and he might not have much to beat, with Faugheen priced at 5/1 although the Mullins horse has not been seen in action a great deal and there are negatives over his most recent race.
My Tent or Yours is a 9/1 chance and perhaps is the horse to back to follow home the favourite.
In the Mares’ Hurdle, there’s another hot pot in the form of Apple’s Jade, a horse that obliged at 10/3 last season in the same race and she’s trading at 4/6 this time around after a fairly flawless twelve months.
Vroum Vroum Mag is trading at 11/2 although she’s not been in action recently, while the others are passed over in favour of the Gordon Elliott horse.
Bet365 offer odds of 13/1 about the four favourites winning in the principle races, with the bookies out to get Getabird beaten in the first.
All odds were correct at time of posting.
