Benik Afobe looks a fantastic bet at 12/1 to be Championship Top Scorer this season
We were eagerly awaiting the launch of this market, having enjoyed Benik Afobe’s scoring spree for MK Dons and then Wolverhampton Wanderers last season.
Odds of 10/1 would have been satisfying from an each-way point-of-view, although 12/1 with BetVictor seem very fair about a player who should be pretty near the top of the scoring charts next season.
This former Arsenal trainee didn’t make the great at the Emirates, although Afobe had a 2014/15 season to remember, scoring twice against Manchester United to help the MK Dons to an amazing 4-0 Capital One Cup victory.
It was little surprise to find the powerful striker signed up by Kenny Jackett in January and Afobe’s goals very nearly helped Wolves into the play-offs, with Nouha Dicko providing an excellent partner in crime for the new holder of the number ten shirt.
While Darren Bent and Chris Martin are installed around the 8/1 mark, there is no basis for why Afobe should be one and half times the odds considering his strike rate was equally as good last season during the second half of the campaign.
He scored 19 goals in 30 appearances for MK Dons last season before managing a return of 13 in 21 for Wanderers after a move in the New Year. If you pro-rata this over 46 games, you would see the back of the net hit 28 times!
At the age of 22, he can also continue to improve unlike his Derby counterparts, with Jackett potentially having to fend off suitors in January when the market opens for temporary business.
Naturally, there is the outside risk of a winter move to a Premier League club, although the fact that Afobe has been given the number ten shirt and enjoys a harmonic relationship with his manager and the fans suggests he will be in no rush to leave.
Injuries can play havoc with top scorer bets, although antepost bets also have the advantage of providing some value for money throughout the season if your player is in contention.
It wasn’t long ago that Wolves had a certain striker called Sylvain Ebanks-Blake who was priced up at similar odds to top score in this division, with the stocky forward obliging with ease. Step forward Benik Afobe to continue in a similar vein.
