Chelsea favourites to sign John Stones after reports of a transfer request

John Stones now 10/11 to sign for Chelsea with Sky Bet

Chelsea are aggressively pursuing the signature of John Stones this summer, with just a handful of days to land the Everton central defender before the transfer window closes.

The Blues have already had three bids for the England international rejected, although it is thought that Stones is now ready to agitate for a move to Stamford Bridge by actively handing in a transfer request.

Roberto Martinez claimed on Friday that he knows nothing about reports about a transfer request, although if the rumours are true, then the Everton boss might have no option other than to accept £40 million and go in search of a suitable replacement.

The odds certainly aren’t clear-cut although Sky Bet now go 10/11 that Stones becomes a Chelsea player by 1 September, with Everton 11/10 and so the player’s future is up in the air for the time being.

Nevertheless, if a player wants away from a club, then it’s generally harder to keep hold of them.

And when asked about another possible approach for Stones last Thursday, Martinez said: “The player is not for sale and that is the end of it.”

He added: “Our situation has been very clear from the beginning. We are not a selling club who will lose our best performers.”

Some might beg to differ. Joleon Lescott made a big money move from Everton to Manchester City before, with Jack Rodwell treading a similar path, while Wayne Rooney was also pinched by Manchester United before he blossomed into a world-class player.
