The Celebration Bowl in Atlanta inaugurates the season as South Carolina State faces Prairie View A&M. Later on Saturday night, following the Army-Navy Game and presentation of the Heisman Trophy, Boise State and Washington take the field at SoFi Stadium for the LA Bowl.

The end comes for all but one team in the national championship game on Jan. 19 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.

The second year of the 12-team playoff kicks off on Friday, Dec. 19, when No. 8 Oklahoma visits No. 9 Alabama. The remaining 3 quarterfinal games take place the following day.

The Panthers outlasted Jackson State 23-21 in the SWAC title game as QB Cameron Peters amassed 294 yards passing and 100 yards rushing. South Carolina St. rolled to the MEAC Championship with 7 straight victories, including a 28-17 win over Delaware State in the title game. William Atkins IV leads the Bulldogs’ offense.

LA Bowl
Boise State (9-4) vs. Washington (8-4)
SoFi Stadium, Inglewood, California.

Buzz: The Broncos galloped past UNLV to win the Mountain West title for the third straight year. But the Washington Huskies bring plenty of bark and bite. The 8-4 Huskies held their own in the Big Ten this season but were underwater at 4-6 ATS. Desmond Williams Jr. leads the potent Husky offense, which return to Southern California for the 2^nd time in a month. Washington scored 38 or more points in its past 5 Big Ten wins. Troy, however, held for the backdoor cover as 21-point underdogs. Expect a very competitive game between 2 evenly matched teams that have no common opponents. During Bowl Season, that means take the points.

Old Dominion (9-3) vs. South Florida (9-3)

Buzz: This “neutral” site game is about 80 miles from the South Florida campus. That gives the Bulls a slight edge. USF flirted with a “Group of 5” College Football Playoff berth until losses to Memphis and Navy in a 3-week span. The Bulls recovered by winning their final 2 games by a combined 100-21 score over UAB & Rice. ODU won 5 straight to close the season to finish 2^nd in the Sun Belt Conference.

Both schools suffered major losses after the regular season. Monarchs QB Colton Joseph entered the transfer portal. Joseph gave ODU 302.6 yards of total offense per game. USF head coach Alex Golesh jumped to Auburn. Ohio State offensive coordinator Brian Hartline coaches the Bulls next season. Meanwhile, OL coach Kevin Patrick gets the interim clipboard in Orlando. The talent pool on USF’s side of the ball runs deeper, especially after Joseph's departure. It’s one thing to lose your head coach. It’s quite another to be without your top-tier starting QB.
