Drew Brees spent his first season in retirement doing color commentary for NBC’s Sunday Night Football production. It doesn’t appear he’ll be doing it again in 2022 after Andrew Marchand of the New York Post reported the network is going in another direction.

Brees not only added to that speculation Sunday on Twitter, he opened up a can of worms but hinted at the many things he could be doing in the next year. One of those included “playing football.”

Brees was an all-timer of a quarterback in 20 seasons, 15 of which with the Saints. He’s also 43 years old with diminishing arm strength and injury issues when he hung up the cleats in 2020.

Then again, Tom Brady will be 45 when the 2022 NFL season kicks off. In the right spot, he might be able to nudge a team's NFL futures odds.

Bookies.com oddsmaker Adam Thompson revealed the odds for Brees’ team next year – if he’s playing in the NFL.*

*The Saints still technically control Brees' rights since he had a year left on his contract when he retired.

FOX Sports may have an opening for a color commentator or two for this coming season. Brees has the name power and experience the network covets. If we were including all facets of life into this, we’d set his FOX odds at -150.

When it comes to teams, there aren’t many teams that could be considered “contender” status just without the QB. The Seahawks are that team.

Coach Pete Carroll has indicated 2022 isn’t the start of a rebuilding process with the Seahawks, despite trading future Hall of Famer Russell Wilson to the Broncos. The Class of 2023 QB draft class is expected to be deep. With Drew Lock and Geno Smith currently battling for the top spot on the depth chart, this could be the perfect “low risk, high reward” move for both sides.

The Panthers aren’t in love with Sam Darnold, but they drafted Matt Corral out of Ole Miss in the second round. A year backing up a veteran like Brees could do a world of good for Corral before taking over the reins in 2023.

The Falcons moved on from their own veteran in Matt Ryan and are poised to go with Marcus Mariota.

Kyler Murray is the man in Arizona – until he isn’t, and nobody is really sure all fences have been mended. Perhaps Murray ends up in Carolina; would the Cards prefer Darnold, Colt McCoy or Drew Brees on this win-now team?

It could be argued that the Falcons and Panthers – teams not on the cusp of competing for a championship – aren’t what Brees is looking for. Seattle and Arizona, on the other hand, might be.

The Cowboys and Saints get heart-tugging nods. Brees is a Dallas native and could serve as a reliable No. 2 and mentor to Dak Prescott. He’s also a living legend in the Big Easy, and New Orleans doesn’t appear all in on Jameis Winston, last year’s starter.
