England 18/1 to win 2018 World Cup after 23-man squad announced

England are seventh favourites to lift the trophy as Gareth Southgate includes Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Danny Welbeck in squad

England are heading to Russia soon to compete in the 2018 World Cup and bet365 offer 18/1 about the Three Lions winning the tournament.

It might seem implausible that England will ever win another World Cup, although they are seventh favourite in the betting and a shorter price than Portugal were to win Euro 2016.

Gareth Southgate has been able to name a squad packed with quality players and he might have to leave the likes of Jamie Vardy, Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard on the bench.

England are 6/5 to win Group G which features Tunisia, Panama and Belgium, with the manager stating that the players have a point to prove in Russia.

“The players we’ve picked are free [of inhibition], they’ve got a point to prove and are hungry,” said Southgate.

“They have loads they want to do in their careers. That brings energy and competition right across the squad. They get on, and that’s a starting point. The next stage is that they start to pull each other, raising standards of how we train, getting hold of each other on the pitch. Just getting on isn’t enough. We’ve got to go deeper than that.

“They must not be afraid of upsetting each other. They have to be brave enough to have conversations that need to be had. It’s one of the things that makes a winning team: when you’re comfortable enough with each other so that, when you have those conversations, it is not held against you. You move on quickly from it. It is recognised as trying to get the best out of each other.

“I see such exciting players coming through. Some of them, I don’t think they know how good they might be. I watched Ruben Loftus-Cheek at Crystal Palace and he was having a huge impact on the game, but there’s still more to come. He’s 6ft 4in, he’s technically outstanding, he can dribble and beat players, he can retain the ball, he can slide passes … I’m thinking, go on, go again. He just needs to keep progressing and he needs time to do that. That applies to so many of them.”

All odds were correct at time of posting.
