England Women could find Norway too strong when the two teams meet in this last sixteen clash
There’s Monday night football but not as we know it, with England Women competing in the 2015 World Cup where they hope to claim a quarter-final spot.
The clash in Ottawa looks to be an evenly-matched one, with Norway also finishing second in their group after two wins and a draw, the latter of which came against tournament favourites Germany.
Coach Even Pellerud admitted after that particular game that his team were fortunate to come in at half-time trailing by just the one goal, with parity being restored thanks to Maren Mjelde’s exquisite free-kick.
However, this is a Norway team who made short work of Ivory Coast and Thailand, while we should also note that the Nordic nation finished runner-up at Euro 2013 so perhaps their lower world ranking than England shouldn’t be heeded too much.
The Three Lionesses kept things tight against France in their opener to lose 1-0 before 2-1 wins over Mexico and Colombia. The fact that they haven’t kept a clean sheet thus far in the tournament could be problematic against a Norwegian side who scored eight times during their group stage.
Norway shouldn’t be 2/1 with some bookmakers to win this match and we’d actually make them slight favourites, with England over-reliant on Fran Kirby and Karen Carney to make things happen.
Kirby’s fast-track progress has been impressive although there’s still a lot of pressure on her young and inexperienced shoulders and we’re happy to side with England’s opponents on the Draw No Bet market.
