Five FA Cup third round shocks that we’re backing this weekend

The FA Cup sometimes throws up a shock or five and we’ve identified some cracking value for this weekend’s coupon

The Premier League fixture scheduling has been relentless over Christmas this season, with matches being played virtually every day and we’ve got the odd prospect of Tottenham meeting West Ham on a Thursday night.

However, this could be to our advantage when looking to place a few bets on this weekend’s FA Cup coupon, with the relegation-threatened Premier League teams likely to field a reserve side and instead focus on the bread and butter.

Here are five FA Cup shocks that could well happen. These odds are all available with number one bookmaker bet365 are the time of writing. A winning £1 accumulator will potentially return £1700 although we also recommend 10 x trebles here.

1. SHREWSBURY TOWN @ 3/1 to beat West Ham
This is our strongest fancy of the weekend coupon. The Shrews are flying high in League One with realistic aims of getting promoted to the Championship. Their home form has been exceptional and West Ham won’t have a strong team out.

David Moyes has suggested that trying to win the FA Cup this season is unrealistic and we can therefore confidently back Town to overcome what will effectively be a Hammers reserve team.

2. LUTON TOWN @ 6/1 to beat Newcastle
The Hatters are flying at the top of League Two and Nathan Jones’ side wouldn’t be out of place a division higher. Newcastle are among the teams scrapping against Premier League relegation and a weakened team could be vulnerable against confident opponents.

3. EXETER CITY @ 11/4 to beat West Brom
The Baggies are staring into the abyss right now and Alan Pardew won’t be dreaming of another big FA Cup run which is what he achieved with Crystal Palace. Exeter are among the better League Two teams and will be facing an Albion reserve team which should lead to a close encounter.

4. COVENTRY CITY @ 4/1 to beat Stoke
Mark Hughes will be relieved this is a Saturday afternoon non-televised encounter although they make the short journey to the Ricoh Arena to face a Coventry side who are going great guns under Mark Robins this season.

5. FULHAM @ 21/10 to beat Southampton
We’re not sure there’s that much difference between these teams right now. Fulham have finally found some form after being touted for a promotion push at the beginning of the season, with Southampton sinking like a stone in the Premier League.

All odds were correct at time of posting.
