Chelsea are the most street-wise team in Europe and can win the Premier League and Champions League double this season
Chelsea are a 15/2 chance to claim victory in the Champions League this season and we’re happy to be backing the London side at those prices.
Here are five reasons why the Blues are a better bet than Bayern Munich, Real Madrid or FC Barcelona.
1. Diego Costa will be well-rested after his ban
Costa is missing in action for Chelsea after stamping his authority on Emre Can, although the Spanish international might benefit from this breather when the Blues tackle PSG later in February.
This is a striker who helped Atletico win the La Liga title last season and the team also reached the Champions League final thanks to his goals and overall contribution to the team.
2. The Chelsea defence is an absolute wall
Kurt Zouma is coming through nicely and might well be partnering John Terry instead of Gary Cahill, while Branislav Ivanovic provides cover in the centre-half position while also functioning as a first-class right-back.
Cesar Azpilicueta is waiting for his chance to shine while Filipe Luis finds form in the left-back position, with this defence having already helped Chelsea to a Capital One Cup final after shutting out Liverpool over two games.
3. Thibaut Courtois is the best keeper in the world
Like Costa, Courtois was part of a very successful Atletico team last season and the Belgian is now at Stamford Bridge making it very hard for the opposition to score.
This goalkeeper doesn’t appear to have any faults and is especially strong in one-on-ones where several opposition players have been foiled this term. He’s pretty much the ideal person should Chelsea have a penalty shoot-out in Europe.
4. They should have the league sewn up by April
Jose Mourinho will want to get things sorted in the Premier League as quickly as possible so that Chelsea can focus hard on the Champions League and what would be a momentous double. Five points clear at the time of writing and with Manchester City’s campaign fading.
5. Chelsea’s track record in Europe is strong
Having landed the Champions League in 2012, the Blues then won the Europa League in 2013 and reached the semi-finals of the former last season. The likes of John Terry, Didier Drogba, Branislav Ivanovic, Gary Cahill, Ramires and Oscar are all players who know what it takes to go all the way in this competition.
Then there is the manager, for whom winning the Champions League with Chelsea remains the holy grail. Mourinho has bought the t-shirt with Porto and Internazionale but winning the competition with the Blues would really mark him out for greatness.
