The League Two campaign will be put to one side tonight as Carlisle United face League One side Chesterfield in the Capital One Cup.
Carlisle manager Keith Curle says that the match against Chesterfield at Brunton Park represents a “massive opportunity” for the Cumbrians and he will certainly be in a confident mood following his side’s 1-1 draw away to Mansfield at the weekend.
United struggled throughout the 2014/15 season, however Curle hasn’t been shy in his summer transfer dealings and a new-look Blues side will pose a tough obstacle for the Spireites to overcome tonight.
Indeed, Carlisle had to fight from a goal down on Saturday, a debut strike for new signing Jabo Ibehre cancelling out an opening goal from Mansfield’s Malvind Benning. Curle will field a strong side for tonight’s match and will be hopeful of leading his side to a decent cup run in this competition.
“I want to win football matches and to do that I’ve got to put a very competitive team out there,” said the Carlisle manager. “It’s a massive opportunity for us.”
“Do we take our foot off the gas? No. There are players who want to get in the team, and players who have got the shirt have got to keep on performing.
“With the fitness levels, strength and character we’ve got, we have to ask can we roll out 50, 55, 60 games consistently?”
Carlisle United are 7/2 outsiders to win at Brunton Park tonight, however we at Bookies.com feel that they possess enough quality in the squad to stop Chesterfield in their tracks. Nevertheless, Chesterfield are no mugs and will also be in high spirits following their opening day 3-1 win over Barnsley. As such we’ll be expecting them to get their names onto the scoresheet tonight although a home win looks very much to be on the cards at Brunton Park.
