Florida State is coming off its first ACC title, but a conference blueblood is on top of the conference entering the 2020-21 season.
The Duke Blue Devils are favored to win the conference at +200 despite entering the new season facing a nine-year title drought. That’s the longest streak of Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s 41-year tenure at Duke, which includes 12 conference titles and five in a row from 1996-2001.
Duke, Virginia, North Carolina and Florida State are the consensus top four teams in conference with odds ranging from +200 to +400. Louisville is a distant fifth at +1200, as oddsmakers aren’t expecting any surprise contenders for the ACC title.

ACC Betting Favorites
Duke lost three major contributors to the NBA Draft this offseason, but the Blue Devils have never had issues reloading with top recruiting talent. Jalen Johnson is the star freshman this season and already impressing with 13 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. Sophomore forward Matthew Hurt is also on track for a breakout season, though Duke has struggled in the early going.
The Blue Devils escaped with an 81-71 win over Coppin State before a 75-69 home loss to Michigan State. They will be major players in the conference race as always, but a nearly decade-long stretch without hanging an ACC banner at Cameron Indoor is certainly worth considering.
The Cavs were at or near the top of most ACC predictions and check in at No. 2 on the college basketball betting betting board. But Virginia is clearly a work in progress following an early-season loss to the San Francisco Dons.
Serious offensive struggles last season are still a concern, but Marquette transfer Sam Hauser is already pitching in there. The 6-8 senior forward is averaging 14.5 points and the Cavs defense should be one of the best in the nation again. Virginia has won at least a share of the ACC title in four of the last seven seasons under Tony Bennett and will compete for the top spot again in March.
The North Carolina Tar Heels are coming off a brutal season in Chapel Hill, their first ever with a losing record under coach Roy Williams. They also lose star point guard Cole Anthony after he went No. 15 overall to the Orlando Magic in the 2020 NBA Draft.
However, oddsmakers are still high on North Carolina thanks to a ton of incoming talent and the presence of Garrison Brooks, the top returning scorer in conference with 16.8 points per game. Freshmen guards Caleb Love and R.J. Davis are averaging double-digit point totals early this season and should lead a Tar Heel team ready to return to relevancy and put last season in the past.

Leonard Hamilton’s squad is looking to knock off the usual suspects as the underdog for a second straight season. The Seminoles lose a lot of talent from that championship roster, including standout guard Trent Forrest. Senior guard M.J. Walker filled his shoes with 17 points in the opener and the Seminoles have a very promising freshmen in guard Scottie Barnes.
This program has been on the rise for a while and is looking to show that last season wasn’t a fluke. We wouldn’t bet against it, especially considering other favorites like North Carolina and Virginia still have plenty to prove.
Other Teams to Consider
Louisville: The Cardinals are a clear fifth in the ACC outlook, albeit with a better chance than other middle-of-the-pack teams to make noise during the regular season or ACC tourament. Unfortunately, Louisville had to postpone an ACC/Big Ten Challenge game against Wisconsin because of COVID-19 and reportedly shut down team activities due to contact tracing. When they return, this should be a well-rounded team capable of pulling off a few upsets.
Miami: The Hurricanes have a stellar senior in preseason All-ACC guard Chris Lykes, though he suffered a sprained ankle and will miss time early in the season. Once Miami gets him back the Hurricanes could surprise more than a few teams in ACC play.
