Just like everywhere else, the ACC has had a bizarre season. Standard-bearers Duke and North Carolina have been shadows of their former selves. Regular-season champ Virginia suffered a recent three-game skid. Anyone can beat, or lose to, anyone else.

That power vacuum presents bettors with a wide-open field for this week’s ACC tournament in Greensboro, N.C., where about 2,500 fans will be allowed in per session. Virginia is the college basketball betting odds favorite at +225, followed by Florida State at +260 and North Carolina at +425.

The top six seeds are likely assured of NCAA berths, leaving Louisville, Syracuse and North Carolina State to try to play their way in. Duke, winner of the most recent ACC tournament (played in 2019) is the No. 10 seed and needs a miracle to continue its March Madness streak of 24 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.

Should You Bet On Duke or North Carolina?

No. 6 seed North Carolina with the third-lowest odds in the field? Hey, 18 past championships carry a lot of weight, as does the location in Greensboro. But recent losses to Marquette and Syracuse — neither of them NCAA Tournament teams at the moment — should be a warning to anyone who thinks UNC can run the table.

Meanwhile, Duke’s odds of +2000 are a mirage. One of the worst defensive teams in the league, the Blue Devils have dropped nine of 15. Duke is unlikely to win more than one game in Greensboro, much less the whole thing. North Carolina, which upset Florida State late last month, may merit a flyer if you bleed Carolina Blue. But UNC shouldn’t be your first choice. And betting on Duke would be throwing money away.

Our Pick To Win ACC Tournament

Florida State. No ACC team has been consistent, but the Seminoles finished the regular season by winning 10 of their last 13 games. Top-seeded Virginia is largely dependent on 3-pointers, and as we saw in a late-February blowout loss to N.C. State, the Cavaliers are vulnerable when those shots don’t go down.

Compare that to long, tall and deep Florida State, which leads the league in scoring average and 3-point percentage; the Seminoles also are excellent at denying shots. The Noles are also capable of picking apart Virginia, as they did in a 21-point victory in February.

3 ACC Tournament Longshots To Consider

Georgia Tech: The surprise of the league, the Yellow Jackets won six straight to close the regular season, secure their NCAA bid and seize the No. 4 ACC tournament seed. Georgia Tech shoots well, takes care of the ball, has the ACC Player of the Year in forward Moses Wright and carries tempting +2000 odds.

Virginia Tech: The Hokies beat Villanova in November, beat Virginia in January and played well enough in between to earn the No. 3 ACC tournament seed. Behind big man Keve Aluma and one of the league’s best inside games, +600 Virginia Tech is an intriguing wild card.

Syracuse: Syracuse still plays that funky zone that gives opponents fits, evident in recent victories over Clemson and North Carolina. The eighth-seeded Orange carry +5000 odds and NCAA Tournament desperation, but would have to overcome a tough quarterfinal matchup against Virginia to have a chance of pulling off the shocker.
