It doesn’t get much bigger in modern golf than the oldest golf tournament in the world celebrating an epic milestone while being played on the oldest golf course in the world. We get that this week with the 150th Open Championship set to tee off from the Old Course at St. Andrews on Thursday.

With the LIV Golf controversy, the PGA Tour’s response and the top DP World Tour players mixed in, the “British Open” is must-watch golf at its apex. It’s also must-bet golf.

The golf betting board is littered with well-known names. Rory McIlroy is the favorite at most top betting sites and betting apps with +900 odds to win. Xander Schauffele, who has won his last two tournaments including the Scottish Open last week, is +1200. Cameron Smith, Top-10 Finish

Odds: +300 at DraftKings

Smith has the game that matches up well with the Old Course. He ranks fifth on the PGA Tour in approach shots, is top 15 in both par-4 scoring and 3-putt avoidance, and is top 20 in proximity to the hole. Nobody else on the tour can combine those overall numbers.

He’s also come through with a third at The Masters and 13th at the PGA Championship, and he won The Players Championship. Among golfers with top-10 potential, Smith’s odds have the best value.

Don’t worry about how to pronounce the name, the guy is golfing well with three top 20s in the last four events. That includes a runner-up at the John Deere and, just as impressive, 16th at the Scottish Open that had many of the top players in the field. Xander Schauffele, Top-10 Finish

Nobody is playing better right now than Schauffele. He’s won the last two tournaments, including last week’s Scottish Open, used as a warmup for this week’s major. He’s finished top 20 in six straight events, including the PGA Championship and U.S. Open.

Now it’s his turn to break out, perhaps even win. When it comes to three of my favorite stats categories of the week – Strokes Gained: Approach, Par 4 Scoring and 3-Putt Avoidance – Schauffele is the only golfer in the field who’s top 10 in all three on the tour.

2022 British Open Betting Tips

The Old Course is long but expect a ton of roll off the tees. How much? Drives in the range of 400 yards will happen. This course could ultimately turn into a driver-wedge-putter experience.

Hitting long is great, but approach shots and putting will be the biggest keys to winning. The greens are undulating and difficult, so either getting it close to the hole (proximity) and/or avoiding the blow-up three-putt and four-putt spots will be important to making the cut and placing high.
