The 78th Golden Globes are scheduled to take place on Feb. 28. Netflix leads all content providers – if that’s what we’re calling studios these days – in both television and movie nominations with 22. Amazon was a distant second with seven. The Netfilx film “Mank” leads all movies and shows with six nominations.

Hosts Tiny Fey and Amy Poehler return for the fourth time but will be performing their duties from separate coasts due to COVID-19 concerns and protocols. The nominees, meanwhile, will be featured on the NBC telecast virtually from multiple locations around the world.

The virtual nature of the Globes extends to the betting space, as well. As of now, there no legal sports betting sites in the United States offering odds on the winners. The odds below are via British bookmaker Ladbrokes. It’s not known if betting will be offered on the Globes stateside as those decisions are often made closer to the event date.

In 2020, New Jersey and Indiana offered betting on the Oscars. It not known yet what states will allow legal betting on the 2021 Academy Awards. Finalists for the Oscars will be announced mid-March; the awards show is April 25.

Here’s a look each of the major categories to be awarded Golden Globes and the odds for each nominee.

Golden Globes Best Picture Drama Odds

Film Odds
Nomadland +100
The Trial of the Chicago 7 +150
Mank +1000
Promising Young Woman +1000
The Father +2000

The aforementioned “Mank” faces tough competition in the Golden Globes Best Picture Drama category. “Nomadland” is the betting favorite in this category. The drama stars Frances McDormand and is centered around a woman who lost everything in the Great Recession and ends up living at various stops across America. The movie has also generated significant Oscar buzz, especially due to McDormand’s performance.

“The Trial of the Chicago 7” is a close second behind “Nomadland” at +150. The Netfilx drama was produced in association with Dreamworks and dramatizes the legal battle of seven people charged in connection with the protests, riots and mayhem that ensnared the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago.

The other nominees are “Promising Young Woman” and “The Father.” Both films tackle current real-life issues. “Woman” confronts the lasting effects of physical and emotion trauma by telling a story of misguided revenge. “The Father” holds up a mirror to the millions of families dealing with members who suffer from dementia.

Our Pick: The verdict is in (“The Trail Of The Chicago 7”)

Golden Globes Best TV Series Drama Odds

TV Series Odds
The Crown -250
Ozark +400
The Mandalorian +600
Lovecraft Country +1600
Ratched +1600

The fourth season of “The Crown” was must-see streaming television during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic. The series follows the life of Queen Elizabeth II from her wedding to Prince Phillip in 1947 in until the early 21st century. This past season focused on the Queen’s reign from the mid 1970s until the early 1990s. It was highlighted by the Queen’s tense relationship with Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and the emergence of Princess Diana on the world stage.

The other nominees are “Ozark” and “Ratched” via Netflix, Disney’s “The Mandalorian,” and “Lovecraft Country” from HBO.

“The Crown” sits as a prohibitive -250 favorite for good reason. It appeals to audiences worldwide. The writing and acting were stellar, save for a borderline cartoonish portrayal of Thatcher by Gillian Anderson. Elizabeth Debicki delivered a near-angelic version of an impish Diana, who becomes a worldly princess before our eyes.

Oliva Coleman and Tobias Menzies completed their two-series run of the Queen and her prince in Season 4. Viewers will have to wait until 2022 for Season 5. The costume designs and settings are transformative. And the storylines remain riveting across each episode.

Our Pick: Long Live The Queen! (“The Crown”)

Golden Globes Best Television Motion Picture Odds

Television Motion Picture Odds
The Queen’s Gambit +100
Small Axe +300
Unorthodox +400
Normal People +500
The Undoing +1000

Given the new paradigm in direct-to-streaming movies due to the pandemic, what constitutes a “movie” vs. “television motion picture” seems like anyone’s guess. Here, the Golden Globes has five nominees in its “Best Television Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made For Television” category.

The favorite is “The Queen’s Gambit” at +100. The Netflix mini-series tells the fictional-but-partly-based-in-real-life story of chess prodigy Beth Harmon, played by Anya Taylor-Joy. The miniseries is based on a 1983 novel written by a chess prodigy, but the resemblance to reality stops there. The fictional and underestimated Harmon navigates a series of metaphorical and real chessboards throughout life.

Amazon’s “Small Axe” tells the tale of several real-life experiences in the West Indian community of London and is set between 1969-82. It is currently the second choice at +300 but might be worth your money given its wide geographic appeal.

The other nominees are “Unorthodox” from Netflix, “Normal People” via Hulu and HBO’s “The Undoing.”

Our Pick: Checkmate (“The Queen’s Gambit”)

Golden Globes Best Actress in a Drama Odds

Actress FilmBest Odds
Viola Davis Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom +150
Carey Mulligan Promising Young Woman +200
Frances McDormand Nomadland +300
Vanessa Kirby Pieces of a Woman +600
Andra Day The United States vs. Billie Holliday +1600

This category is loaded.

Viola Davis is the favorite for her role in the Netflix movie “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Davis plays the real-life singer Ma Rainey, considered by many to be “Mother of the Blues.” In the movie, Rainey struggles with the demands of her white managers while trying to corral a young and ambitious horn player (the late Chadwick Boseman).

Carey Mulligan serves up justice for every victim of the “Me Too” movement in “Promising Young Woman.” She plays a young woman, once traumatized, who delivers vengeance against those who cross her path.

McDormand’s inspirational performance in “Nomadland” is equally powerful, but in an opposite manner. McDormand’s character remains defiant despite her fate while always seeing hope with the next sunrise. The other nominees are Vanessa Kirby for “Pieces Of A Woman” and Andra Day for “The United States vs. Billie Holliday.”

Our Pick: Road Warrior (Frances McDormand - “Nomad”)

Golden Globe Best Actor in a Drama Odds

Actor FilmBest Odds
Chadwick Boseman Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom -400
Anthony Hopkins The Father +400
Riz Ahmed Sound of Metal +1200
Gary Oldman Mank +1600
Tahar Ramin The Mauritanian +2000

Another loaded category.

In “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” the late Chadwick Boseman is the strong favorite at -400 in his final role. Boseman died from cancer in August. In this movie, he portrays young upstart horn player Levee Green. The film is based on a play of the same name written by August Wilson. It is centered around a Chicago recording session featuring Rainey in 1927. Green arrives at the session with his own agenda and hopes to get his own record deal away from Rainey and the Seasoned Georgia Jazz Band. The tale soon turns tragic.

Anthony Hopkins is the second choice for his role in “The Father.” Hopkins plays an aging father who resists the help of his daughter as his dementia progresses. It is a story which hits close to home for so many. Hopkins and Oliva Colman have received best actor/actress nominations for their performances in “The Father” from the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild and Critics Choice awards.

The other nominees are Riz Ahmed for “Sound of Medal,” Gary Oldman for “Mank” and Tahar Ramin in “The Mauritanian.” Ramin plays Mohamedou Ould Slahi, a captive held by the U.S. government in Guantanamo Bay who was held for 10 years without ever being charged or tried.

Our Pick: Wakanda Forever (Chadwick Boseman – “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”)

Golden Globe Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy Odds

Actor FilmBest Odds
Sacha Baron Cohen Borat Subsequent Moviefilm +100
Lin-Manuel Miranda Hamilton +300
Andy Samberg Palm Springs +400
Dev Patel The Personal History of David Copperfield +400
James Corden The Prom +2500

Sacha Baron Cohen’s “Borat” sits at the betting favorite in the Best Actor in a Musician or Comedy category. In this sequel to Cohen’s 2006 comedy, we catch up with Cohen’s fictional Kazakh television journalist character, who is back in America with his 15-year-old daughter. The “mockumentary” was produced by Amazon and nominated in the “Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy” category. It was loaded with political overtones that, no doubt, appeal to many members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The film scored 85% on Rotten Tomatoes but just 68% on Metacritc.

Lin-Manuel Miranda is the secondary betting favorite for his performance in ”Hamilton.” This is a filmed version of a live June 2016 performance of the Broadway play at the Richard Rogers Theatre. It features the original cast and streamed on Disney+ starting in July. Miranda wrote the story and stars as Alexander Hamilton, who was the nation’s first Secretary of the Treasury. The film offers Globe voters the chance to award Miranda for his “Hamilton” efforts.

The other nominees are: Andy Samberg for his role in “Palm Springs,” Dev Patel for “The Personal History of David Copperfield” and James Corden for “The Prom.”

Our Pick: “Just You Wait” (Lin-Manuel Miranda – “Hamilton”)
