The once-proud Honda Classic has been getting screwed over on the schedule for a while now. That’s especially the case in 2022, with the event sandwiched between the Genesis Invitational and Arnold Palmer Invitational ahead of the Players Championship in two weeks. That’s why none of the top-10 players in the world are in the field at PGA National after all 10 teed it up last week at Riviera.

Weeks like this make TV executives sick, but it’s actually beneficial for diehard golf bettors and DFS junkies who can rip off Strokes Gained stats for guys like Aaron Wise and Christian Bezuidenhout. The casuals might not be fired up for this week’s golf betting action, but events like the Honda Classic are perfect for the year-long players who embrace the weekly grind regardless of field strength.

Best Bet: Matthew NeSmith Top-10 Finish

It’s always fine and usually wise to go deep down the board in tournaments like this, with a weak field and difficult scoring conditions. NeSmith is coming off a T-55 at the Genesis Invitational and the game looked to be in a strong place. He lost a few strokes on and around the greens, but the ballstriking was on point. That’s extremely important this week at one of the most challenging courses on Tour.

The 28-year-old South Carolina grad is sharp with the irons and keeps it in play off the tee, so this should be a great course for him. He’s finished inside the top 40 in two previous starts in Palm Beach Gardens, and we expect a low ownership percentage for DFS purposes as well. If the putter gets hot, NeSmith can contend this week.

Honda Classic Betting Tips

This is one of the most difficult courses players will see all year. It’s a Jack Nicklaus redesign featuring a lot of his typical traits – it’s a second-shot golf course with trouble all over the place around the greens, and it’s not forgiving for those who stray off the fairway.

Approach shots and iron play is always extremely important due to the large number of water hazards and potential problems at every turn. When the wind blows hard, as it surely can this time of year, simply breaking par becomes a challenge.

Given those factors, and the weaker field, we’re looking at strong irons players further down the board who don’t make a ton of bogeys and can grind it out away from the safe haven of TPC layouts. Don’t be afraid to go further down the board and make sure the swing is in a good place regardless of recent results.
