What’s going on here? We’re three races into the NASCAR season and we have three surprise winners — all of whom have paid handsomely for those bettors bold enough to back them.

Michael McDowell was a +6000 NASCAR betting choice for the Daytona 500, Christopher Bell carried +5000 odds into the Daytona road course event and William Byron was +3300 before last week’s race at Homestead.

The last of those three was the most eye-opening, given that the 1.5-mile Homestead oval is a more traditional layout than a superspeedway or a road course. And now NASCAR heads to a type of track emblematic of the discipline: An intermediate tri-oval in Las Vegas, where the winners have always been elite drivers competing for top teams.

But something is clearly different this season, perhaps a latent effect of practice being eliminated at most tracks. And Vegas got a bit wacky last season, when a late caution jumbled the running order and put Kurt Busch in position to win. Spin the roulette wheel and check out these seven best bets for Sunday in Sin City.

Kyle Larson to Win, +1000 (BetMGM)

Are we jumping on the bandwagon of upset winners? Not quite. Larson presents very good value for a driver who has run well this season and has a great track record at Las Vegas. Larson has just one finish worse than ninth in his past six starts including a pair of runner-ups. After being booted from Chip Ganassi’s team last year, he has landed in a better ride at Hendrick Motorsports and is showing signs of becoming the elite driver many believed he could be. Bet on Larson to win at BetMGM.

Joey Logano Top 3, +320 (Resorts)

Our pick to win last week at Homestead, Logano suffered handling problems all day and finished back in the pack. Las Vegas offers a great place to recover — the Penske driver has won two of the past four races in the desert and finished outside the top 10 there just once since 2013. Among active drivers, his average finish of 8.4 at Las Vegas is best on the circuit. And the No. 22 team should have a notebook full of proven setup tactics to make up for the lack of practice. Wager on Logano for a Top 3 with Resorts.

Kevin Harvick Top 3, +175 (FanDuel)

The best driver from last season is still great in 2021, with three finishes of sixth or better. Harvick has been equally as good at Las Vegas, where since 2013 he has won twice and finished inside in the top 10 in all but one start when he has been running at the finish. Over the past five races at Vegas, only Logano has scored more points. Harvick again looks capable of winning anywhere, picking up where he left off last year. Ride with Harvick for a Top 3 at FanDuel.

Matt DiBenedetto Top 10, +400 (Resorts)

Matty D might be the trendy pick to keep the longshot roll going, given that he finished second in both Las Vegas races in 2020 and carries meaty odds of +6600 to win Sunday. But top 10 might be the more logical wager for DiBenedetto, once again driving for Wood Brothers. His results this season haven’t exactly instilled confidence — his best finish is 28th at Homestead — but morale should be high heading to a track where he earned his career-best finish. Take a flier on DiBenedetto for a Top 10 with Resorts.

Chris Buescher Top 10, +285 (DraftKings)

Roush Racing is a long way removed from its glory days, but the team still turns out quality equipment and Buescher is an under-the-radar driver who has surprised before. He has been competitive this season, and last time out at Las Vegas he turned in a ninth-place finish that represented his best at the track. In searching for capable drivers offering positive moneylines for a top 10, you could do worse than betting on Buescher for a Top 10 with DraftKings.

Martin Truex Jr. Top Toyota, +195 (Resorts)

Truex is the odds favorite among the Toyota bunch at most books, and with good reason: He has been excellent at Vegas with two different teams, recording two victories and six top-four finishes dating to 2015. Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin offer more favorable odds but their finishes at Vegas have been terribly inconsistent when compared to the driver in the No. 19 car. Take Truex as top Toyota at Resorts.

Austin Dillon to Win, +4000 (PointsBet)

If you’re looking for a driver to keep the roll of longshot winners going, here’s your best bet. Dillon is extremely capable on fast tracks like Vegas and he has shown flashes in the desert with a fourth-place run last year and a fifth-place finish in 2016. Two of his three career wins have come at Texas and Charlotte, tri-ovals similar to Vegas. Dillon has also been competitive this season, making him something of a steal at these odds with PointsBet.
