Solheim Cup 2019 Betting Tips & Picks: Will Europe Beat US?

Five years after Gleneagles in Scotland hosted the Ryder Cup, the resort welcomes a second tussle between the best golfers of America and Europe – this time the finest women golfers in the Solheim Cup. In 2014 Europe prevailed on the Jack Nicklaus-designed PGA Centenary Course by five points. Which team and players should fans of golf betting be backing this weekend?

PICK 1: Lexi Thompson Top U.S. Point-Scorer

Lexi Thompson is the favorite in this market, but a very solid one at +300 with 888Sport. She’s unbeaten in foursomes (two wins and a half), has won two-and-a-half points from three in her fourballs the last two years; and is also undefeated in singles (one win, two halves).

Her overall record is five wins, two losses and four halves, but here’s a thing: Her two defeats came in her first two outings so she has not lost since Day 2 in her debut. You suspect U.S. captain Julie Inkster will give her every chance of contributing on Day 1 and 2, and if her long game is the fit it should be she should lead the away challenge.

PICK 2: Europe to Win

In the last five renewals of this match there has rarely been much in it. True, America has won three of those, but Europe was mighty close to winning in 2009 and should have won in 2015. Moreover, if you look at the 2019 two lineups, the theme is maintained. They both have strengths and both are also notable for their weaknesses (revealed by the fact that both captains had to turn to out-of-form veterans for their picks).

Georgia Hall and Europe present great value.

Both teams have two wins for the year, they own a similar number of career wins and, if the Americans tend to make more LPGA top-10s, the Europeans have home advantage, which Inkster is concerned about.

The truth is that this is a mighty close call: There is very, very little between the two teams and yet the prices don’t say as much, making Europe the underdogs. That makes them the play at +150 with SugarHouse.

PICK 3: Georgia Hall Top European Point-Scorer

The doubters would suggest that the Englishwoman’s only top-10 this year came in her very first start, and that can’t be argued. They might also point out that she won two and lost three in her debut two years ago; again that is undisputed.

The key is the price: She’s +900 with 888Sport. I’d argue that she played much better than her numbers indicate in 2017, further note that she has broken 70 in her past seven first rounds, add that she has rare experience of playing the course (in last year’s European Championship) and is proven under the cosh (winning the British Open).

There are doubts about all those likely to feature in this market, but her price is easily the tastiest.
