Then, in the semifinals, arguably in the most dramatic of contests that will forevermore be remembered as a Champions League classic, they knocked out tournament favorites, Manchester City. Once again, they staged a surreal come-from-behind win to edge Pep Guardiola’s highly-fancied Citizens 6-5 on aggregate.

Real Madrid clinched their 35th La Liga title a couple of weeks ago, after thrashing Espanyol 4-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu. They have no other silverware to compete for save the Champions League. This absence of competitive play until the final against Liverpool could be both an advantage or a disadvantage. Either they’ll be well-rested or rusty.

That said, Real Madrid’s odds-defying, otherworldly run through the knockouts has an air of destiny about it that is impossible to overlook. Taking out three of the tournament favorites as it did in surreal fashion is nothing short of phenomenal and it has every chance of doing the same to Liverpool.
