Maria Sharapova begins the defence of her French Open crown at Roland Garros with Heather Watson also in action
With the French Open first round in full swing, Bookies.com takes a look at some of the best contenders in the ladies tournament, and serves up some excellent odds to whet your appetite!
Going into the competition, Serena Williams is the favourite, and you can take a best-price 11/4 with PaddyPower for the American star to win.
The 2014 champion, Maria Sharapova will also be looking to defend the crown she won so impressively last time. At 9/2 with Coral, she is definitely worth considering, after picking up form at the right time. She reached the semi-finals at the Madrid Open, before triumphing over Carla Suarez Navarro in the Rome equivalent, and looks even stronger and more confident than she did a year ago.
Last year’s beaten finalist Simona Halep is 5/1 with Ladbrokes, not a bad price to say she progressed through to the second round in straight sets in Paris, after beating unseeded Russian Evgeniya Rodina.
Serbian hope, Ana Ivanovic, meanwhile will be looking to produce a better performance in the second round, after dropping the opening set to beat Yaroslava Shvedova. Although, in the end, the win was convincing, she will need to come out of the blocks in her next contest. She is 66/1 with Skybet to triumph in Paris, for the first time since 2008.
It is Heather Watson, however, who leads the British charge in France, and priced at 50/1 with Ladbrokes as the player to win the first quarter-final, she is aiming to stay aggressive throughout.
“I’m definitely trying to continue to be aggressive. The hardest thing is making yourself do it and just being brave when it comes to important moments in the matches,” said Watson.
“I have played a lot of matches here and I do like it.
“Actually last year was the first time I did something fun in Paris and went out. I just did some real touristy stuff, took loads of pictures, went to some French restaurants. I actually had salmon tartare and some Nutella and coconut crepes.”
