In addition to the start of the football season, the big thing happening in August is The Great British Bake Off, with Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry putting bakers to the test in this popular BBC TV series.
This is one of the best reality TV shows in the sense that you can learn how to bake, experience the highs and lows of the cooking experience and enjoy plenty of humour thanks to Mel and Sue.
Twelve bakers will compete to win star baker every week and hope to be ultimately crowned as champion, with Marie the 3/1 favourite with Ladbrokes at the start of the competition.
The 66-year-old could follow in the footsteps of last year’s winner Nancy, with Marie having lived in Paris where she enjoyed the patisseries to the extent that they inspired her to greater things.
Alvin is a nurse from Berkshire and has been installed as the 5/1 second favourite, with the father-of-two baking at least four times per week and comes across as something of a perfectionist.
Flora is the youngest baker on the show this year, with the history of art student hoping that a relative lack of experience won’t hinder her chances of going deep in this contest.
Coming from a big family of bakers means that she could have the credentials to impress the judges, while Dorret, Ian and Paul are all 8/1 chances.
Dorret has no less than 40 years of baking experience and the accountant should stand a great chance of getting her timings right, while Ian looks set to be an experimental sort of baker which could get the thumbs up from Berry and Hollywood.
Paul’s sugar-work is apparently a sight to behold so perhaps this baker offers the best value considering that presentation is a key aspect of winning the Great British Bake Off, although the proof of the pudding will be in the watching.
Ugne is the 16/1 outsider, although the lady from Lithuania has spent her life learning baking methods from her mother and grandmother so she won’t be out of place in the kitchen.
Nadiya, Tamal and Mat are the other bakers in what will be an initially crowded kitchen, with the latter looking as though he might be the first one to go through the exit door – describing himself as a “competent amateur”.
