Punters on CLIFF EDGE this evening could be staring down a nice profit.
The Roger Varian-trained horse of that name looks the best bet on the eight-race card at Newcastle when he runs in the 1m2f handicap, based on his latest effort. Making his all-weather debut at Lingfield 10 days and tried in blinkers for the first time, he looked like being well beaten when getting outpaced passing the 3f pole, but he eventually got going again and flashed home to get third. Off the same mark this evening and over a slightly longer trip, he is taken to go two better for his in-form stable.
There’s nothing out of the ordinary running in the 1m nursery on the card and it looks a good opportunity for Richard Fahey’s SNOOKERED to get off the mark. Having shown little on his first three starts, he was given a lowly rating of 49 for his handicap debut over 7f at Leicester last time and he almost took advantage, going by just half a length. He didn’t help his chance by not settling off a modest early gallop, so the run can be marked up, and the promise of a stronger pace this evening over an extra furlong should see him in an even better light. His stable remains in cracking form.
Charlie Hills has struck with two of his four runners at this track since the Tapeta surface was laid down and all three of his runners this evening are worth a second look. Rosarno should make his presence felt when making his debut in the 1m maiden, while MAY ROSE can be forgiven a defeat when attempting to land a hat-trick at Windsor last time as the ground was softer then she likes. Still on a fair mark and with Jim Crowley booked, she could get back to winning ways in division one of the 5f handicap.
Her stablemate SEPAL has proved a little disappointing in four starts this season having looked a nice filly in the making when landing a Leicester maiden last September. The form of that race has worked out well with the second and fourth now rated in the 80s, so the selection isn’t badly treated at all off 74 and perhaps the switch to this surface can bring about an improvement. She’s been off since July but her work’s been good at home, according to her trainer.
