Our racing guru has his eye on a trio of runners this afternoon.
Trainer Alexandra Dunn made it 13 wins for the season with Black Narcissus at Leicester last Tuesday and she could again be amongst the winners this afternoon.
She sends two runners to Plumpton and her booking of Sam Twiston-Davies to ride HONOURABLE EXIT in the 2m handicap hurdle (due off 3.20pm) very much takes the eye. A dual Irish point-to-point winner, the nine-year-old has shown next to nothing in two starts for his current stable but he has now qualified for handicaps off a mark of 89, and that could prove lenient. Furthermore, his proven stamina should prove a big asset on the very testing ground.
He faces several out of form rivals with the notable exception of Loves Destination, who has finished has been put in as 2/1 favourite. Chris Gordon’s mare has finished runner-up the last twice including when chasing home the aforementioned Black Narcissus last time. However, she’s been doing all her best work late on over longer trips (2m3f, 2m4f) and the drop back to 2m is therefore a negative. The stable is also going through a quiet spell.
Dunn’s ZERO VISIBILITY should go well off bottom weight in the 2m handicap chase (2.10pm). He needs forgiving an odds-on defeat last time but that’s not too difficult as the race may have come too soon after a fall at Fontwell, where he had the race at his mercy when crumpling at the last. Prior to that he won a handicap hurdle here on soft ground and, having been a given a 42-day break to freshen up, he could well bounce back in this modest contest in receipt of weight from all his rivals.
Wolverhampton is sharing all-weather duties with Kempton and the best bet at the former track looks to be the Richard Fahey-trained ABBEY ANGEL, who is bidding to follow up a course and distance success two weeks ago. The handicapper has raised her 5lb for that but that’s only fair as she won in good style by two and a quarter lengths, despite having to overcome the widest draw, and she has won off a 2lb higher mark.
With a better draw in stall 3 this afternoon and with the stable going well, she’s taken to see off seven rivals, the best of whom may be top weight Oakley Girl, who has to concede the selection 9lb.
