Horse Racing Tips of the Day – Monday June 22

They're racing on the flat at Wetherby

It's flat action all the way today and it could pay to be patient as the best bets are in action at Windsor and Wetherby this evening.

They’re racing on the flat at Wetherby this evening (sounds odd, doesn’t it?) and the best bet on the seven-race card looks to be Ann Duffield’s RED CHARMER in the 7f handicap (8.15pm).

The five-year-old is in the form of his life and makes a quick reappearance after narrowly failing to follow up his Beverley win under a penalty at Ripon last Wednesday. He perhaps found the 1m2f trip at the Yorkshire track stretching his stamina and he looks something to bet on now back over his ideal trip and off a 1lb lower mark. Once reassessed, he’ll be racing off a much higher mark than today’s 72 and his trainer’s decision to strike while the iron is hot can be rewarded, with no worries over the fast ground.

It’s a competitive little race, which helps explain why we can back him at 11/4, and he perhaps has most to fear from the revitalised Mercers Row, who carries a 6lb penalty for his smooth Carlisle success, albeit against some modest rivals. Gannicus is also feared, although he appears to save his best for Brighton.

The second bet is a potential big improver now he steps up in trip. Luca Cumani’s AL showed definite promise in two juvenile starts last season, including when finishing fourth behind subsequent Epsom Derby winner Golden Horn at Nottingham in October. Granted, he was beaten over ten lengths that day but it was only his second start and even the extended mile trip would have been an insufficient test of stamina. He’s bred to come into his own over middle distances and makes his handicap debut here off what looks a very generous handicap mark of 67. His trainer has been amongst the winners of late and he’s booked talented Kevin Stott, who takes a handy 3lb off his back.

Bookmakers have not been slow to spot his potential either and we are being asked to take 11/4 in what looks a competitive contest. However, he’s up against some relatively exposed sorts, not many of which appear to be going forward. I’m already on and will shopping around in the morning with a view to having a bit more on at 3/1 or better.

Wetherby 8.50, Red Charmer @ 11/4 bet365
Windsor 9.10, Al @ 11/4 Betfair
