Our racing expert has three to back at Pontefract.
There’s Listed action at Pontefract this afternoon and the feature 1m Silver Tankard Stakes looks a good opportunity for Mark Johnston’s improving filly I’LL HAVE ANOTHER to get back to winning ways. She was making it three wins for the season when landing a Listed contest (1m) in Germany last month, after minor wins at Chelmsford and Doncaster, and she’s twice run well in defeat since. Her latest length second at Newmarket (1m2f), where she was just a length behind the highly regarded Norway, was another step forward and a reproduction here should suffice with this stiff mile in her favour.
Andrea Atzeni missed out on a winner at Ascot on Saturday due to a contentious ban and the aggrieved Italian can gain some minor consolation in the 2m2f handicap as he’s on board my idea of the winner in Mick Channon’s SO NEAR SO FARHH. The three-year-old filly is taking on older more exposed types here and the sex / age allowance means she’s getting weight from all of them. Given that she’s run well at this track the last twice, winning over slightly shorter last month before only finding one too good over today’s trip (would have finished closer but for being hemmed in at a vital stage), I fancy she can make amends and make it three wins for the season.
Atzeni gets the leg up on DEJA in the 1m2f handicap and the lightly-raced three-year-old looks the one to be on. A Wolverhampton maiden winner for Jeremy Noseda last season, he was reappearing after over a year off when making his stable debut for Peter Chapple-Hyam at Chester (1m21/2f) in September. That long absence didn’t stop him justifying favouritism on that occasion, making all and winning with more in hand than the nose margin of victory would suggest, having idled when getting lonely in front before finding more when challenged. That took his record to 2-3 and with his rider Paul Hanagan saying afterwards that there was plenty of improvement to come from him, he should be up to defying his initial mark of 84.
All odds were correct at time of posting.
