Our racing expert marks your card for Monday's action.
Both of today’s bets are in action at Perth and I’m hopeful they can provide Brian Hughes with a double on the card.
Dawerann has been put in as favourite for the 3m handicap hurdle having finished runner-up over track and trip when last seen out over jumps in July. However, Gordon Elliott’s charge is now 5lb higher and is having to concede weight all round.
The Rebecca Menzies-trained PIKARNIA is in receipt of nearly a stone and the seven-year-old has shown enough in recent starts to suggest he can take advantage. A winner at Sedgefield in March, he has continued to run well and could have done without the ground going testing when runner-up over course and distance last time. The handicapper has left his mark alone and on today’s better ground he can get his head back in front under Hughes.
Gordon Elliott also provides the favourite for the 3m handicap chase in the shape of Mountain King, who is 9lb higher than when winning here last time, and he also has a decent second string in Urtheineiwant.
But neither may win as Hughes’ mount BAILEYS CONCERTO served notice that he was about to end a long losing spell when finishing a close second behind Creevytennant over track and trip on his latest outing. The third, Sonnofpresenting, has won since to frank the form and the selection can run off the same mark of 118, which is 21lb lower than his peak rating. Now an 11 year-old, he’s unlikely to reach the same heights again but a race of this nature should be well within his grasp.
