Our resident tipster is eyeing up an 11/2 double at Southwell.
Just the two all-weather meetings at Southwell and Lingfield this afternoon and PATRIOTIC looks nap material in the 1m handicap at the former track (due off 1.10pm).
The Chris Dwyer-trained eight-year-old is a three-time winner on the Fibresand surface and is starting to look well handicapped again having been dropped to a mark 5lb lower than for his success in December 2014. That was over 7f but his overall form suggests he is ideally suited by today’s trip, with eight of his nine wins being recorded at a mile or slightly further.
He’s now on a 12-race losing run but the ability is still there as he showed when finishing third over 7f here last time. He was noted making stealthy late headway that day to be beaten just three and a quarter lengths and today’s extra furlong along with the booking of champion jockey Silvestre De Sousa, who has won on him previously, can see him back in the winner’s circle.
There is another solid favourite in the 7f handicap run half an hour later with Tony Coyle’s WESTWOOD HOE likely to prove hard to beat. The five-year-old is on a roll having won at Doncaster in November and over course and distance last time, despite dwelling after the gates opened and being drawn widest of all. He’s been raised just 2lb for that success and is dropping back in grade today, so the hat-trick is very much on the cards.
His trainer is sounding hopeful he can win today and has an even bigger target in mind for the gelding. He said: “Looking at the form he’s hopefully the one to beat having won a 0-105 last time. He’s a good horse who had an issue or two that we’ve solved. The plan is to win and get high enough in the handicap to qualify for Good Friday.”
A £10 double on today’s selections with BetVictor would return £65 at current odds.
