Horse Racing Tips of the Day – Tuesday October 23

Our racing expert has three handicappers to back at Yarmouth, all at decent prices.

The opening 6f nursery looks wide open but that means we get to back the pick, Denis Quinn’s MASTER MATT, at a fair price – the opening 12/1 does seen a tad generous. The son of Slade Power has gone close over 5f the last twice, finishing a half length second in a Redcar novice two starts back, having attracted strong support beforehand, before being beaten by the same margin at Kempton last time. Having been held up as usual at the Surrey venue, he was closing all the way to the line and today’s extra furlong could be just what he needs to get his head in front under Robert Havlin, who is replacing a 5lb claimer.

There are others with more convincing form lines in the 1m3f104y handicap but BUTTERFIELD is more of a dark horse in that he has just three runs under his belt and has scope for further improvement. William Knight’s five-year-old made his belated racecourse debut at Goodwood (1m2f) in August, when keeping on well into third, and he again hit the line hard when fourth on his next outing at Kempton (1m3f), doing best of those from off the pace. On that evidence, he should at least be competitive off his opening mark of 71 and over today’s slightly trip, with his stable’s record at the track – 4-16 (25%) for a £65.10 level-stakes profit – providing further encouragement.

George Peckham’s JAWSHAN is making a quick reappearance in the 1m2f23y handicap having finished a close up fourth on the all-weather over half a furlong less at Wolverhampton just five days ago. That run was coming after a short break, so he should be sharper for it, and he also ran well on his racecourse debut at Lingfield in July (1m), when finishing strongly into second under Harry Bentley (back on board today), despite missing the break and running green. It appears that he is now getting the hang of things after four outings and should be capable of better still over today’s longer trip and off what looks a fair mark of 64.
