Our racing expert has three fancies for the afternoon action at Leicester.
Sir Michael Stoute’s ACCOMMODATE is fancied to get off the mark in the 7f fillies’ novice stakes having shown considerable promise when fourth on her Lingfield debut. A 350,000gns yearling and sister to Group 3 winner Daban, she showed her inexperience early before staying on under hands and heels to finish just out of the places, giving the strong impression she would come on considerably for the experience. Today’s extra furlong won’t go amiss either on breeding and getting 3lb from the penalised Impulsion, who has ruined her chance with slow starts the last twice, she looks a good bet to score under Ryan Moore. UPDATE – the selection is weak in the market – out to 7/1 from 4/1, while Impulsion is a solid 9/4 favourite – so best keep stakes small.
The class 3 1m4f handicap looks a good opportunity for Owen Burrows’ NAQAAWA to get back to winning ways. She certainly looks more progressive than her five rivals having got off the mark in comfortable fashion in a Nottingham handicap (1m2f, firm) two starts back before finishing third in a better race than this at York, when the good to soft ground was against her. The return to a faster surface and an extra furlongs, which she ought to relish on breeding, can see her take another step forward under Ryan Moore, who was successful on his only previous ride for the stable. Her two nearest rivals in the betting, Rake’s Progress and Blooriedotcom, are respected but have looked more at home on an easier surface.
The class 3 7f handicap looks very competitive but the application of a tongue-tie might help FLAVIUS TITUS find the required improvement to land the spoils. Roger Varian’s three-year-old has continued to run well since landing a Doncaster handicap (7f, good to firm) in June, including when beaten less than a length on his subsequent start over this track and trip. He can race off a 1lb lower mark this afternoon and the stable is is much better form now, with seven winners on the board already this month. Andrea Atzeni has been on four of those and is renewing the partnership, so everything is in place for a big run. Of his rivals, Mukalal looks the main danger as he is on a good mark and has the services of Ryan Moore.
