Horse Racing Tips of the Day – Wednesday January 6

Serena Grae looks tasty in the 1m4f handicap at Kempton

Our resident tipster likes the look of three mares running today.

This is the time of year when Venetia Williams tends to send out plenty of winners and she has an excellent record when running horses under a penalty.

Her TARA FLOW can be the latest case in point when she runs in this afternoon’s 2m handicap hurdle at Huntingdon (due off 2.40pm) and is nap material. Having shown considerable promise in a bumper and a novice hurdle last season, the six-year-old mare returned at Uttoxeter in December and duly landed the odds by 13 lengths. She then followed up on her handicap debut at Leicester, making a mockery of an opening mark of 114 to win in a similar fashion, and it’s very doubtful a 7lb penalty will stop her bringing up the hat-trick in similar conditions. Aidan Coleman does the steering and he could enjoy an armchair ride.

There are three all-weather meetings and while I won’t pretend I enjoy it as much as the turf racing, it does keep the show on the road and can provide the odd winner. That brings me on to my next bet in the shape of the Jeremy Gask-trained ROSEALEE, who ran a cracker when second at Chelmsford recently and looks a good bet to one better in this afternoon’s 5f handicap at the Essex venue off the same mark. A Kempton maiden winner over this trip on her debut, she was then out of her depth when finishing down the field in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot and would have needed it last time as it was her first run since June.

Kempton is perhaps my favourite sand venue as it’s pretty fair and the best bet on this evening’s card is Marcus Tregoning’s SERENA GRAE, who takes on ten rivals in the 1m4f handicap (6.10pm). The five-year-old mare ran a blinder to finish third in a stronger race than this over 1m3f here last month and the form looks rock solid with the runner-up and fourth going on to finish first and second in a 0-100 at Lingfield next time. The handicapper has strangely dropped her 1lb since and from what looks a decent draw in stall six, she might just advantage under George Baker, who is one of the top jockeys here.

Chelmsford 1.30, Rosealee 5/2 Coral
Huntingdon 2.40, Tara Flow @ 13/8 Coral
Kempton 6.10, Serena Grae each-way @ 12/1 Coral

All odds were correct at time of posting.
