There is plenty of market confidence in Roger Varian’s PREFONTAINE for the class 2 nursery at HQ and it’s easy to see why as the son of Mastercraftsman appears to be learning his trade and improving with racing. After a solid third over a mile at Haydock two starts back, he seemed to relish stepping up to today’s trip, the maximum for juveniles, at Nottingham last time, pulling well clear of his rivals who were well strung out behind. He’s gone up 7lb for that but I very much doubt that will stop him and he’s a confident choice with Andrea Atzeni booked.
The class 2 fillies handicap over a mile looks competitive but we should get a good run for our money from Richard Fahey’s CROTCHET. She has been running well for a while but it took a step up to 7f for her to get off the mark at Musselburgh three starts back, when doing all her very best work late on, and she appeared to improve again when trying a mile at the same track last time, winning more cosily than her length and a quarter winning margin would suggest. She has only gone up 4lb for that and given she is open to further improvement at the trip, I fancy she can go in again under Ryan Moore.
