Ireland have triggered one of the biggest odds swings in sport this year by rumbling hosts England in their one-off Test cricket match at Lord’s on Wednesday.
England were heavy favourites heading into the first day of the four-day match in London as they prepare to face Australia in the Ashes later this summer.
But the hosts — who won the Cricket World Cup earlier this month — were stunned by Ireland’s bowling attack as they were whittled out for just 385.
Ireland piled on the pressure in their first innings and by the end of the day led their hosts by 122 after themselves being bowled out on a dramatic day in the capital.
Ireland odds crumble
There are still three days of this match to go but the bookmakers have already slashed their odds on Ireland claiming an unlikely victory.
Bookies 888Sport had Ireland at 66/1 to win the match before a ball was bowled — the biggest price in the UK market. But those odds crashed to 9/1 after the dramatic fall of England’s top order.
By the end of the day Ireland’s odds had fallen further to 19/5 in a remarkable overturning of the market. In fact, they had been 3/1 at one point but a late flurry of wickets from England saw those odds widen again.
England Still Favourites To Win The Test
Despite Ireland’s huge gain in the betting markets, it is still England who are favourites to win this four-day series.
The hosts have another innings to come and will be desperate to avoid an embarrassing upset so close to the Ashes starting next month.
England are 1/4 with Unibet having been as far out as 33/100 at one point. They had started the day a comfortable 1/10 to get the victory.
Ashes Odds Affected
Despite confidence in many punters that England can scrape a win here, there is growing concern Australia could blow Joe Root’s men away when the five-match Ashes series begins on August 1.
In their cricket betting odds, Paddy Power had England at 8/11 to win the Ashes before Wednesday’s dramatic events.
That price has widened to 4/5 as fans get jittery over England’s chances in the biggest Test series of them all.
Yes, England are still favourites to win the Ashes, but Australia performed better than expected during the Cricket World Cup and thumped England 4-1 the last time these nations met in 2017/18.
Australia’s price on them winning the Ashes came in from 7/4 to 6/4 on Wednesday evening.
