With the intrigue of the local NBA teams — the New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets and Philadelphia 76ers — having to rebuild or add depth to their rosters, the 2020 NBA Draft is drawing strong interest from New Jersey and Pennsylvania bettors.

The draft will be held Wednesday at the ESPN Studios in Bristol, Connecticut, with the Minnesota Timberwolves holding the No. 1 overall pick. The Knicks have the 8th and 27th picks in the first round and 38th overall in the second round; the Nets have the 19th pick in the first round and the 55th overall in the second; the Sixers select 21st in the first round and have four second-round picks.

“For the NBA Draft, we have overall 1st pick, 2nd pick, 3rd pick and so on, and then a number of props up for individuals (example, LaMelo Ball Draft Position Over/Under 2.5) and then specific school and conference props (ex. How many players from Duke will be drafted in the first round over/under 2.5) and (ex. How many players from the Big 10 will be drafted in the first round over/under 1.5),” said Thomas Gable, director of race and sportsbook at Borgata Casino in Atlantic City. “We also have props up on the number of international players that will be drafted in the Top 10, the number of freshmen drafted in the Top 10, etc.

“We’ve taken some decent advance money on the Utah Jazz to win the title next year very soon after the NBA Finals concluded this year. That’s the only team that has really stood out here.”

FanDuel released its early NBA betting trends on Monday, including top 5 selections by bet count and handle.

LeMelo Ball (-210 in NBA odds) is currently FanDuel’s biggest liability in the No. 1 overall pick market. He also leads in bet count with 38%, followed by Anthony Edwards at 18%, James Wiseman 9%, Obi Toppin 8% and Deni Avdija 6%.

Edwards leads handle with 45%, Ball 40%, Wiseman 5%, Toppin 3% and Avdija at 2%.

A Lot to Bet On

FanDuel, which is in both New Jersey and Pennsylvania, has also expanded its draft markets to include NBA Draft parlays, player draft position, match bets, over/under on freshmen drafted and over/under on how many players from specific conferences are selected.

German-based Tipico, which launched its online platform in New Jersey on Oct. 19, is looking forward to its first NBA Draft here and is locking in on one local team with one particular market.

“Traditionally we focus on the top five for the NBA draft, but we anticipated demand and excitement about the future from Knicks fans, so we’re offering outrights on the No. 8 pick. There is volume there already, and we expect it to pick up as the week goes on,” said Keith Gormley, head of marketing, brand and acquisition at Tipico US.

School Prop Bets

PointsBet is offering school markets on its site.

For instance, how many Duke players will be drafted in first round and also two-player and three-player combinations on where they will be drafted in top 10, top 20 and top 25 such as will R.J. Hampton and Cole Anthony be drafted in top 15 (+365).

PointsBet has also seen action on the upcoming NBA season which starts on Dec. 22 with a 72-game season.

“The Lakers are our second most bet team for NBA outright winner 20/21. Only team in front of them is the Nets, which have attracted an overwhelming amount of action and nearly 40% of the overall bet count,” said Mike Korn, sports analyst for PointsBet. “The Nets are definitely the most popular team to bet on currently for 20/21 NBA season. With some potential big free agency signings, in addition to already having Kyrie and KD, the Nets are the fan favorite to win the NBA title in 20/21.”
