Liverpool 4/9 to qualify for Champions League L16 after defeat

Liverpool now 2/1 to win Champions League Group C after losing 2-0 away to Red Star Belgrade

Jurgen Klopp was spitting feathers on Tuesday night after watching his Liverpool side lose 2-0 away to Red Star Belgrade despite being massive favourites to claim victory.

The Reds were sent off as 1/5 favourites although two first-half goals from Milan Pavkov saw the Serbian champions claim a victory which brought them back into contention to qualify for the last sixteen.

Despite this defeat, Liverpool are no bigger than 4/9 to make it through to the knockout phase of the competition, with William Hill among the bookmakers who chalk up that price.

A positive result away to Paris Saint-Germain in their next Champions League match will see Liverpool in a good situation after PSG drew 1-1 away to Napoli in their most recent match.

However, Klopp admits that his team have to improve for the clash at the Parc des Princes, with Liverpool once again drawing a blank on the road in Europe and they will come up against fearsome opposition in the French capital.

“In the game [we lost our mojo], but not in general,” Klopp said. “It made sense to make a few changes. A few we had to make and a few we wanted to but it is easy to say it didn’t work out in the end.

“I don’t say it is already serious if we lose twice but we have to make sure it will not happen again otherwise it will be difficult as the next game is already an away game [at Paris Saint-Germain].

“The last one is a very difficult home game against Napoli. We have to make sure you cannot ask that question again. It is too early to say that is how it is. We have to make sure in Paris that we do better. There were a lot of moments when we could get in control of the game and we didn’t do, we made the wrong decision.”

Liverpool are now 2/1 with bet365 to win their Champions League group, with Paris Saint-Germain 11/8 favourites to top the section and the match between the two teams at the Parc des Princes will clearly be pivotal.
