Liverpool have joined city neighbours Everton in the Europa League and start the competition as joint 14/1 favourites alongside Spurs and Napoli.
Liverpool’s season was filled with so much promise at the start. Many believed that the Reds could go one better than last season and win the Premier League as well as make a decent effort in the Champions League.
It certainly wasn’t to be. Liverpool are inconsistent in the Premier League at present and have just been knocked out of the Champions League following a dreadful campaign which saw them amass a mere five points from their six group matches.
Many Liverpool fans are now calling for the dismissal of manager Brendan Rodgers and Anfield favourite Rafael Benitez has emerged as favourite to take over at the Merseyside club should the management lose patience with Rodgers.
Nevertheless, this aside, the Reds are expected to perform well in Europe’s second-tier competition and are up for grabs at 14/1 to land the trophy.
Rodgers has set his sights very much on winning the competition,
“We are disappointed to go out but we showed the character to come back and give ourselves a fighting chance”, Rodgers stated.
“The Europa League is still a prestigious tournament. There are great teams in there and it’s great experience for the younger players. It’s still European football.”
The bookies are optimistic about Liverpool’s chances of winning the Europa League, Betfred making the Reds joint 14/1 favourites alongside Tottenham Hotspur and Napoli. City rivals Everton are fourth favourites with Bet365 offering 16/1 for the Toffees to go all the way.
