Brendan Rodgers looking to sign a third Saints player this summer
Dejan Lovren is next on Liverpool FC’s hitlist, although Southampton have reportedly rejected a £20m bid for the Croatian who has recently returned from the 2014 World Cup.
Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana have already been acquired in the past few weeks, althoough Liverpool are being made to work harder for the signature of Lovren, with Southampton valuing him at closer to the £25m mark.
Brendan Rodgers is clearly a fan of the Croatian and Liverpool fans will be encouraged by the fact the manager is looking to make the defence more solid, with Kolo Toure not exactly cutting the mustard last term.
It remains to be seen as to whether Southampton will allow Lovren to leave despite the centre-half handing in a transfer request at St Mary’s, with the 24-year-old currently on holiday after Croatia exited the 2014 World Cup at the group stage.
Lovren is set to return to pre-season training on 21 July although he has been advised to stay away from Southampton until some form of deal is agreed with Liverpool.
The Liverpool Echo report that the arrival of Dejan Lovren could see Daniel Agger leave the club, with the Dane making just 18 starts last season and already facing competition for places from Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho.
Liverpool’s summer spending currently totals £37 million thanks to the acquisition of Lambert, Lallana and Emre Can, although there is clearly plenty of cash left to sign new defenders for the Merseyside club.
