Call it “Madden 22 – Father & Son Edition.”

Sports bettors who back both the “Madden Curse” and Super Bowl favorites might want to re-configure their 2021 NFL betting strategies after the video game’s newest cover was unveiled Thursday.

QBs Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes, winners of the last two Super Bowls, teamed up for EA Sports’ latest NFL incarnation. Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat Mahomes and the Chiefs 31-9 in Super Bowl 55 this past February.

The odds were 12-1 of both quarterbacks appearing on the Madden 22 cover, according to a Bookies.com analysis. There was no legal sports betting market available on the Madden cover.

EA Sports put two athletes on its Madden 10 cover in 2009, Steelers DB Troy Polamalu and Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald. That cover was an illustration, the Madden 22 cover features a joint photograph of Brady and Mahomes taken at Carrollwood Day School in Tampa on April 6.

Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers was our favorite to appear on the cover at 11-2, but he’s since been embroiled in a protracted struggle with Packers management and could potentially sit out the 2021 season. Tennessee running back Derrick Henry was another top pick at 6-1.

Brady, Mahomes Favored For Super Bowl Rematch

The Bucs are consensus favorites in NFL futures markets. Tampa Bay is priced at -182 at FOX Bet to win their division, and +333 to win the NFC.

The Chiefs, meanwhile, remain the top pick to win the AFC West and their third-straight AFC title. DraftKings sportsbook has Kansas City at -335 to take its division and +250 to win the AFC .

Oddsmakers back the Chiefs to win their second Super Bowl in three years. Kansas City is +500 at FanDuel to reclaim the Lombardi Trophy, while the Bucs are +650 to repeat as champs at the same site. (Check out the latest FanDuel promo codes).

Mahomes, 25, holds an edge over Brady, who will be 44 when the NFL season begins, and everyone else in league MVP betting markets. The 2018 NFL MVP, Mahomes is +500 at PointsBet to win the award. Brady is +1600 at the same site. Brady was NFL MVP in 2007, ’10 and ’17.

The Chiefs and Bucs each face steep numbers in projected totals for the 17-game season in 2021 at top sportsbooks. The total for the Chiefs is 12.5 wins at William Hill sportsbook. The over is +120 while the under is -140. The Bucs’ total is 11.5 victories. The over is -125 and the under is +150.

No ‘Curse’ For Brady, Mahomes Thus Far

Neither Brady nor Mahomes has been stymied by the so-called Madden Curse. Both QBs have been featured on the game’s cover previously and won an NFL championship in the interim. Mahomes was the lone player featured on the Madden 20 cover two years ago and would lead his team to a victory in Super Bowl 54 that season. Brady was the cover boy of Madden 18 back in 2017. Since that appearance, Brady won Super Bowl 53 with New England and his most-recent title in Tampa five months ago.

TOP QBs AGAINST THE SPREAD: Tom Brady| Patrick Mahomes| Aaron Rodgers

Brady has said he would choose his cover mate in Madden 22 - if he was not playing for the digital version of the Bucs.

“I’m taking Mahomes and (Travis) Kelce and Tyreek Hill and the Chiefs,’' Brady told Bleacher Report when asked which Madden 22 team he would choose in lieu of Tampa Bay. “If I can’t play with my team, I’m playing with them because they’ve got an explosive offense and there’s nothing a quarterback likes more than an explosive offense.’'

Mahomes had a Madden 21 rating of 99 before last season began. Brady’s rating was 90 to begin the season before it reached 96 prior to Super Bowl 55. The Madden 22 game goes on sale Aug. 20.
