Malky Mackay now favourite to take over as Wigan manager

Malky Mackay at Wigan? It looks increasingly likely.

Former Cardiff City gaffer Malky Mackay has emerged as the favourite to take over the reins at Wigan Athletic.

The big money seems to be heading towards the former Cardiff City manager being the next in the hot-seat at Wigan Athletic, the bookies offering Evens following some heavy betting on Mackay.

The Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has made no secret of the fact that any application from Mackay would be extremely welcome and that has resulted in many punters deciding to back the Scotsman.

He now sits firmly as clear favourite to take over the reins at the struggling club following the departure of Uwe Rosler, however he will realise that he will have a huge task on his hands to turn Wigan’s season around, the side sitting in the automatic relegation zone with a mere 16 points from their first 17 matches to date.

It may just be a matter of time before his appointment is announced, however there are others in with a chance of stepping into the hot-seat at the DW Stadium, these including Tony Mowbray, the former Middlesbrough manager up for grabs at 2/1 .

Wigan boss Dave Whelan has remained relatively tight lipped about Rosler’s successor, however he has stated that Mackay is amongst the candidates being interviewed for the vacant position.

“I can confirm that Malky Mackay has applied and we will speak to him,” Whelan stated.

“We’ve had over 20 applications and we started interviews on Tuesday. Hopefully we can make an appointment before the game this weekend against Middlesbrough.

“It’s an important job and I don’t like to mess around when I think I’ve got the right person.”

There has nevertheless been an amount of concern expressed by many about the unsuitablity of Mackay for this position following his derogatory text messages which ultimately prevented him from securing the position of manager at Crystal Palace earlier this season.

All odds were correct at time of posting.
