Middlesbrough's win over Man City has resulted in their promotion odds being slashed

Middlesbrough were the giant killers in the fourth round of the FA Cup, knocking Manchester City out of the competition and Boro are now just 4/6 to enjoy promotion to the top flight at the end of the season.

That result sees Middlesbrough’s odds for promotion slashed to as low as 4/6, only Derby County sitting above them in the betting market.

The Championship table is extremely congested this season and the Teessiders sit third in the league table behind Derby County and leaders Bournemouth. Nevertheless a mere six points separate the side from seventh-placed Wolves and complacency cannot be allowed to set in.

Nevertheless, ‘Boro have remained undefeated in their last six outings and they can boast the Championship’s tightest defence with a mere eighteen goals leaked in this season’s 27 matches.

The FA Cup win over reigning Premier League champions Manchester City at the weekend has seen Aitor Karanka’s side emerge as joint favourites to enjoy promotion to the top flight following a rather lengthy six-year absence. Indeed, some bookies are going as low as 4/6 for the side to be plying their trade in the Premier League next season, whether they manage this automatically or via the play-offs.

Derby County were pre-season promotion favourites and they still sit atop the betting market at 4/6. Their win over Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday evening sees them soar to second in the Championship table, replacing Middlesbrough in that position.

Bournemouth are still top of the table, albeit purely on goal difference. They have suffered three defeats in their last four matches and will be eager to once again see daylight between themselves and the chasing pack, following some good results from their main rivals of late.

Ipswich Town remain within touching distance of the leading pack. Indeed the Tractor Boys are a single point off the top of the table and look solid value at 9/4 to enjoy promotion at the close of the season.
