Newcastle, Norwich and Swansea set for Premier League relegation scrap

Can McClaren keep Newcastle in the top flight?

The bookies have Aston Villa and Sunderland already down but third spot very much up for grabs

Wins for Newcastle and Swansea over the weekend have made things a good deal tighter at the foot of the Premier League table.

Steve McClaren’s side were momentarily out of the drop zone after beating West Ham 2-1, although a win for the Swans on Monday night means that the Welsh club are up to 17th.

The bookies think that both teams could be scrapping it out come the end of the season, with Norwich City also expected to be in hot water right until the very end.

Aston Villa’s hopes of remaining a top flight entity continues to look remote, with the Midlands side ten points away from safety and that explains the 1/20 quotes about Remi Garde’s team dropping down to the Championship.

Sunderland also have the proverbial mountain to climb, with Paddy Power going a best price 1/4 about the Black Cats staying in the top flight. However, they are only four points off trouble and sixteen games remain.

Their arch-rivals Newcastle are three points better off, with William Hill offering 6/4 about Steve McClaren’s side although the 3-3 draw against Manchester United along with beating the Hammers suggests that the Magpies could be OK.

Swansea clearly aren’t out of the woods despite the boost of that Monday night win over Watford and they are 15/8 with bet365 to drop down to the Championship.

Then we have Norwich City, a point better off than Swansea but starting to sink down the table at the wrong time. Betfred have 9/4 that the Canaries are relegated and perhaps they might struggle to finish above three other teams.

It looks like two from four, with Bournemouth as big as 8/1 and West Brom a 12/1 chance although Watford are a 33/1 chance and have the potential to drop into a relegation dogfight.

All odds were correct at time of posting.
