Karanka could return to England and take charge of a Birmingham side who are struggling
The search for a new boss for Birmingham City continues, with the Blues sitting 23rd in the Championship table and Aitor Karanka remains at the head of the betting market, with BetVictor offering 2/1 that the Spaniard returns to the Championship with the Midlands club.
Karanka has previously enjoyed promotion with Middlesbrough and the board might consider him a good pair of hands, although Steve Cotterill is also 2/1 and the former Bristol City manager has bags of experience and might also have the stomach for a scrap.
Lee Carsley is in caretaker charge although he’s a 12/1 shot to get the gig on a permanent basis, while Steve McClaren is also at 12/1 although perhaps he doesn’t fancy getting his hands dirty with City in a spot of bother.
Harry Redknapp was surprisingly sacked after Saturday’s 3-1 reverse at home to Preston, with Birmingham City leading 1-0 before North End came storming back in the second half.
The Blues are rooted in the Championship relegation zone, with the club’s owners deciding to change managers and they won’t be short of applications. Aitor Karanka is the 2/1 favourite with BetVictor and perhaps the Spaniard is about to return to England.
Karanka has previously steered Middlesbrough into the Premier League, with the Teeside club unable to remain in the top flight last term and he’s been out of work since.
Lee Carsley will take caretaker charge of the team and he’s 3/1 with Unibet to become the permanent manager, although the former midfielder has commitments with the English FA considering he’s the Under-21 assistant coach.
Nigel Adkins is a 4/1 poke and might be interested in applying for the position, although the bottom line is that the club owners don’t necessarily seem committed to Birmingham at this stage, having previously dispensed with Gary Rowett and brought in Gianfranco Zola which worked out badly.
Redknapp managed to keep the Blues in the Championship last season although they could be bound for League One this time around unless the right man is installed.
Steve Cotterill has been chalked up at 8/1 although we’re expecting Carsley to potentially be given the reins depending on what he does in the first few matches.
