NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced on Wednesday that the 2020 NFL draft will be taking place in Las Vegas.

The draft is set to take place April 23-25 during the offseason directly before the Raiders franchise begins their residence at Las Vegas. The NFL draft has moved around the last few seasons after spending nearly 50 years straight in New York City. The 2020 draft will be the first held in Las Vegas, and the first in the modern NFL era to be held in a new franchise city.

Goodell, in a statement, expressed his eagerness to see the draft move to a new franchise city to welcome them into the league.

"The NFL Draft is one of the most-anticipated events of the year and we are excited to take it to Las Vegas. We look forward to working with the Raiders, Las Vegas officials and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority to create an unforgettable week-long celebration of football for our fans, the incoming prospects and partners."

As part of the same statement, Raiders owner Mark Davis expressed similar excitement to begin their stay in Sin City.

"The Raiders are very excited for Las Vegas and are proud to help host the 2020 NFL Draft. Las Vegas is the entertainment capital of the world and will provide a tremendous experience for the NFL and its fans."

The Traveling Draft Show

The draft location was approved during the Winter League Meeting in Arlington, Texas. The controversial decision to move the Raiders to Las Vegas was made roughly a year and a half ago, but the Raiders won’t take the field in Nevada until the 2020 NFL season when the new stadium is completed.

The NFL draft spent nearly 50 years in New York City before finally beginning to travel the country in 2015. That season and the next, the draft took place in Chicago at Grant Park. The draft moved to Philadelphia in 2017, just before the season that saw the Philadelphia Eagles win the Super Bowl.

The NFL draft has moved around the last couple seasons, most recently in AT&T Stadium in Dallas.

This past season, the NFL draft took place at the home of the Dallas Cowboys: AT&T Stadium. It was the first time the city of Dallas hosted the NFL draft. The 2019 NFL draft is set to be another first, as the draft will be taking place in Nashville, Tennessee, home of the Tennessee Titans. It is yet to be seen if Philadelphia began a trend of the draft host city winning the next Super Bowl.

Current NFL Landscape and Draft Prospects

Just to check the odds of that trend, 888sport currently has the Dallas Cowboys at +1800 odds in Super Bowl betting for the 2018 NFL season. In front of them are, in order from the shortest odds: New Orleans, Los Angeles (Rams), Kansas City, New England, Los Angeles (Chargers), and Chicago. NFL betting has left the current reigning champion Philadelphia Eagles way down the pecking order, with odds of +6600 to win their second straight Super Bowl.

Despite the 2020 NFL draft being several years away, there are a handful of huge names that will be featured (should no NCAA player leave following their junior year). The 2020 draft will be highlighted by names like Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa, Georgia QB Jake Fromm, and Ohio State RB J.k. Dobbins.
