Many sports betting platforms have instituted player prop or team bet refunds on a number of bad beats: a bad call, a heartbreaking end of game play or a video replay that didn’t go quite your way.

This week, one sports betting company — PointsBet — announced it has taken it a step further.

PointsBet has launched a new initiative called the “PointsBet Personal Good Karma Refund,” giving its customers the power to decide which bad beat they want refunded at the end of each month, according to the news release.

Shortly after launching in New Jersey in January 2019, PointsBet created the "Karma Kommittee" to refund clients on the wrong side of the infamous blown pass interference call in the Rams-Saints NFC Championship.

Since then, it has continued to offer Good Karma Refunds in circumstances that sway the fate of a game, and has also introduced bettor-first initiatives including Early Payouts, as seen during last NFL season when Lamar Jackson MVP bettors received their winnings from PointsBet with six weeks left to play.

Now, new PointsBet customers have the power to decide which bad beat hurt the most. Eligibility will be applied to new clients who have placed 10 or more cash bets in a given month. PointsBet said this initiative is the first of its kind in the U.S. sports betting market.

Personal Worst Bad Beat

Beginning on Dec. 28, those clients can then select their personal worst bad beat of the month through the "Settled Bets Page" on the PointsBet app/website. Eligible clients take a screenshot of the bet details with the receipt number showing, and email it to [email protected], the release said. Within 24 hours of receiving an email, the Karma Kommittee will refund clients with a Personal Good Karma Refund of up to $100 in free bets.

“PointsBet's mission has and always will be to provide our clients with the ultimate sports betting experience, and part of that is to continuously practice what we preach in terms of being the true bettor-friendly sportsbook,” Johnny Aitken, chief executive officer of PointsBet USA, said in the news release. “We are excited to take the next step in that mission today in unveiling Personal Good Karma Refunds.

“At PointsBet, we understand that every bad beat is not created equal — some may sting specific clients a bit more than others, should it involve a team they support or an instance where they feel particularly wronged — so as a result, we are excited to put the power back into the hands of our clients and let them decide which bad beat needs to be corrected.”

New PointsBet users will continue to receive a $500 risk-free, fixed odds bet, as well as a $500 risk-free PointsBetting wager, the release said.

Good Karma after Week 1

Tennessee Titans bettors received a reprieve from PointsBet after Week 1 when Stephen Gostkowski miss four kicks in the team’s 16-14 win over the Denver Broncos on Sept. 14.

Titans backers who had single spread NFL bets (-2.5 or -3) in full were refunded by the PointsBet “Karma Kommittee” after Gostkowski missed three field goals and an extra point during the game. He did hit the winning 25-yard field goal with 17 seconds left in the game.

At the time it was the most expensive Good Karma Payout PointsBet had ever done.

“He missed three field goals — something he’d never done before in his 15-year NFL career — and an extra point, leaving 10 points on the board,” PointsBet Communications Director Patrick Eichner said in an email the day after the game. “It’s only right for PointsBet to have the back of bettors who took Tennessee.”
