Remi Garde cut to 9/4 to be named Newcastle United manager

Remi Garde left Ligue 1 side Lyon last May

The search intensifies to find Alan Pardew's replacement at Newcastle and the club now look likely to recruit their new manager from abroad.

Former Lyon coach Remi Garde has emerged as the most likely contender to take on the St James’ Park role following previous favourite Steve McClaren’s declaration that he would be unlikely to leave his current club Derby County.

“I’m going nowhere,” McClaren stated yesterday. ” I do not want to let people down here. You’ve got to show loyalty and I’ve got a job to do here.”

Should Newcastle owner Mike Ashley fail to change McClaren’s mind, there are numerous other candidates who would fit the bill perfectly, however Ashley has put his chief scout Graham Carr in charge of finding Pardew’s replacement and he is said to have been impressed with Garde’s record at previous club Lyon.

Garde has been cut to just 9/4 with Bet365 to take charge at St James’ Park, Steve McClaren now a best price of 6/1 with the same firm. Nevertheless, there has been a large amount of betting on former Magpies midfielder Temuri Ketsbaia, the Georgia national coach now as low as 10/1.

With numerous other foreign candidates still under consideration, some leading British candidates such as John Carver ( 16/1 ), Glenn Hoddle ( 16/1 ) and Bournemouth’s Eddie Howe ( 50/1 ) would now appear to be out of the race. Nevertheless, Hoddle worked with Carr at Spurs and may be considered as a possible short-term manager should the club decide to wait until the end of the season before deciding on a permanent option.

John Carver is currently in charge in a caretaker capacity and has made no secret of the fact that he would be interested in making his position permanent, however the club have made it clear that they wish to make an appointment from outside the club and Carver isn’t seen as a real contender. Indeed, poor results against Leicester City and Burnley recently haven’t helped his chances of staying in his role to the season’s end.
