Mahrez now 11/8 to sign for Chelsea this summer, with the winger unsettled at Leicester
Claudio Ranieri might have recently claimed that Riyad Mahrez wants to stay at the King Power Stadium, although that wasn’t a particularly definitive statement and it still appears a toss-up as to whether the Algerian will leave Leicester or not this summer.
There are clearly interested suitors in Mahrez, with BetVictor now making Chelsea the 11/8 favourites to capture the signature of last season’s Player of the Year, with Antonio Conte hoping to pair the player with N’Golo Kante again.
Arsenal are out to 9/4 with the same bookmaker to sign Mahrez and would dearly love to have him in the same team as Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil, having missed out on Jamie Vardy earlier this summer.
Sky Bet go 11/8 that Mahrez remains a Leicester player after the closure of the summer transfer window, with the player remaining tight-lipped on the subject of whether he will remain with the Midlands club or seek pastures new.
His agent previously stated that it was a possibility that his client would remain at the club although there was also a chance that a big money move would be completed.
Mahrez illustrated his credentials during Sunday’s clash against Celtic where the Algerian scored a stunning goal as part of a friendly match versus the Scottish champions.
It appears that Chelsea or Arsenal would be Mahrez’s destination should he leave Leicester this summer, with Kante’s departure to Chelsea followed by Steve Walsh’s defection to Everton.
Mahrez wouldn’t have the chance to play Champions League football next term if he moved to Chelsea, although a place in the squad at Stamford Bridge would see him earn a significantly larger amount of money.
Ranieri said: “It is good because you can continue to write, write, write. It is good for you but not for us. Did you see Riyad, how he is happy? He played well and worked so hard for the team and scored a good goal. Then he stays with us. Of course.
“For us it is very important because he is one of our stars. He is our fantasy. We can work hard but with him something change.
“With another team there are many more stars and maybe he doesn’t play at the same level. Maybe he go on the bench. It is much better he stay here with me and another year is important for him.
“Maybe now [his value is £40m] and maybe tomorrow another newspaper says £100m. Keep going! Mahrez is okay with us. He understands that someone loves to put some speculation but it is only speculation.”
