The Bet of the Weekend – Barnsley to win at Chesterfield

We kick off the new season by backing a vibrant Barnsley team who should profit from Chesterfield’s decimated squad

BETTING TIP: Barnsley to beat Chesterfield @ 13/5 with bet365

It’s always a touch trappy when it comes to betting on the first round of fixtures although we’ve found a cracking bet in League One.

The 13/5 with bet365 that Barnsley win at the Proact Stadium looks really big when you consider the excellent business that manager Lee Johnson has conducted during the summer.

Ryan Williams, Marley Watkins, Marc Roberts and Alfie Mawson are among those players to arrive at Oakwell, with Ben Pearson and Joe Rothwell on loan from Manchester United and ready to make an impact.

The whole squad is bubbling with confidence after some largely impressive performances during pre-season and the Tykes won’t be settling for a point against opponents who are decimated after reaching the League One play-offs last term.

Paul Cook has left to join Portsmouth and Dean Saunders faces a difficult act to follow, with the Welshman having the unenviable reputation for going down with teams as has happened with Wolves, Doncaster and Crawley Town.

While there are mitigating circumstances in each case, Saunders hasn’t been aided by a player exodus, with Gary Roberts and Sam Clucas notable departures and the manager struggling to recruit new faces on loan from Championship clubs.

It doesn’t bode well with the season about to start and the 13/5 about Barnsley is crying out to be backed, with competition for places as Johnson looks to continue his good work of last season.

The son of Gary is forging a strong reputation after doing well with Oldham Athletic before taking Barnsley to the verge of the play-offs at the end of last season.

Johnson has admitted he is quietly confident about how the new season is going to pan out, with a pre-season win against Kilmarnock especially notable and it was only a spanking at the hands of Middlesbrough which was a negative for the Yorkshire side.

Spurred on by a thousand visiting supporters, we should expect a winning start for Barnsley and we’re even prepared to eschew the Draw No Bet market to maximise our stake for this League One opener.
