More World Matchplay darts quarter-finals matches on Friday, with past winners Phil Taylor and James Wade in action
The likes of top seeds Gary Anderson, Adrian Lewis, as well as darting great Raymond van Barneveld have amazingly all suffered early exits at this year’s World Matchplay, but two former champions still remain.
All-time great Phil Taylor, who boasts 15 titles and the last seven here, and 2007 winner James Wade both feature on Friday night at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens, and could meet in the semis if they overcome their respective opponents.
Phil Taylor v Dave Chisnall
This will be the 26th battle between the duo, and The Power will be confident given his record in this tournament and over Chizzy (18-7), despite losing two of the last three against his fellow Englishman.
Besides a Premier League Darts defeat to Chisnall this year, 10/29 odds-on match favourite with 888.com Taylor tends to win major meetings against his younger peer, and just edged him in last year’s Grand Slam of Darts final 16-13.
The Power always ups his game in this tournament, though, and Chizzy has not looked the most convincing in his first two matches with Jamie Caven and Keegan Brown, coming through both 13-11. Back Taylor, therefore, to triumph with more ease this time around.
PREDICTION: Taylor 16-10 Chisnall @12/1 with 888.com
James Wade v Mensur Suljovic
On paper, Wade should come through this with ease, as he has reached the World Matchplay final five times in his nine entries, always making it to the quarters at least and winning once in 2007.
However, he comes up against 21/5 match outsider with 888.com Suljovic, who has never got past this stage in any major event, but shocked world champion Anderson in the last round and holds a 3-2 career record over The Machine.
Wade will certainly have to be on top of his game if he is to ensure the Serbian-born Austrian doesn’t cause another upset, and can take heart in the fact that this will be the duo’s first meeting in this format of the game. Back him to edge The Gentle Suljovic.
PREDICTION: Wade 16-11 Suljovic @ 10/1 with Coral
