The UFC is back this weekend with another star-studded pay-per-view show. This Saturday, UFC 273 goes down in Jacksonville, Florida. It’s one of the best cards of the year featuring two title fights, not to mention a number of other exciting matchups for the fans.

Volkanovski (-720) vs Sung Jung (+500)

The main event of UFC 273 sees UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski put his belt on the line against challenger Chan Sung Jung. Volkanovski is a monster -720 favorite with Jung as a +500 underdog on betting sites. The odds are high but I still have to pick Volkanovski to win.

Volkanovski is one of the best MMA fighters regardless of weight class. He is currently riding a 20-fight win streak and he is a perfect 10-0 in the UFC. He has fought and defeated many of the best featherweights in the world, including Max Holloway twice, Jose Aldo and Brian Ortega. Volkanovski is good everywhere the fight takes place and he has no weaknesses. Overall, he is very well-rounded and as crazy as this line seems, it’s bettors showing him respect.

Jung is a fantastic fighter in his own right. A UFC veteran for over 10 years, Jung is coming off of a great win over Dan Ige that showed he is still one of the top contenders at 145lbs. That being said, it was just two fights ago when he got picked apart by the aforementioned Ortega, who is a grappler and not a striker. The fact Ortega had so much success on the feet against Jung scares me here as Volkanovski is a much more polished striker and has power.

I do think the odds are higher here than they should be given Jung has KO power and it’s MMA, where anything can happen. That being said, I think Volkanovski gets the job done again. Let’s take Volkanovski to win at -720, and for better value, take him by decision at -135 on your favorite sports betting app.

Khamzat Chimaev (-525) vs Gilbert Burns (+385)

The fight that many MMA fans are most looking forward to on this card is a welterweight fight between Khamzat Chimaev and Gilbert Burns. Although Chimaev is the No. 11-ranked fighter at 170lbs and Burns is No. 2, it’s Chimaev who is a huge UFC betting favorite here at -525 odds. As crazy as it is to see Burns as a +385 underdog, I actually agree with Chimaev being the clear favorite.

Chimaev is one of the best prospects I have ever seen in the UFC. He’s only 27 years old and he is already 10-0 in his pro MMA career, with all 10 of his wins coming by stoppage. Since joining the UFC in 2020, Chimaev is a perfect 4-0 with four wins by finish. He looks like a future champion, and the UFC has fast-tracked him up the rankings in order to get him closer to a title shot. If he goes out there and beats Burns, then he will likely get a title shot later this year.

Burns actually fought for the belt last year and got knocked out by UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman. Although Burns is 5-1 as a welterweight and one of the best fighters in the division right now, he is also 35 and has taken quite a bit of damage during his MMA career. We have seen him get knocked out before and now he’s taking on someone who has big power and an endless gas tank. I like Burns a lot, but this is just a bad matchup for him.

Chimaev is legit and I believe he makes this fight with Burns look pretty easy. The moneyline at -525 is high though, so take a look at Chimaev by TKO at +120 instead on sports betting sites.

Vinc Pichel (-130) vs. Mark Madsen (+110)

Kicking off the main pay-per-view card is a lightweight bout between Vinc Pichel and Mark Madsen. I’m expecting a close, competitive fight between these two veteran lightweights, but I am leaning towards taking the plus-money on Madsen as an underdog to win the fight.

Although he is 37, Madsen seems to be in his athletic prime right now. A former Olympic silver medalist for Denmark in Greco-Roman wrestling, Madsen is undefeated at 11-0 since starting his MMA career in 2013. After winning the silver medal in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, Madsen seriously dedicated himself to MMA.

In 2019 he joined the UFC and so far he is 3-0 in the Octagon with wins over Clay Guida, Austin Hubbard and Danilo Belluardo. Madsen’s high-level wrestling has translated well to MMA, and he is also improving in the striking department. Although he is an older fighter, it still feels like he is learning on the job and getting better.

Pichel is also an older fighter. He’s 39, but he is also in fantastic shape and is known for his relentless pace and cardio over 15 minutes. Since joining the UFC back in 2012, he is 7-2 overall, and he’s won his last three fights.

Pichel is a really good fighter, but one sore spot is his takedown defense. It’s only 25% over a large sample size, and that porous defense against an elite wrestler like Madsen may prove to be his downfall in this matchup.

I’m going with a small upset here and taking Madsen to win the fight at +110. Alternatively, the prop on Madsen to win a decision is available at +240 and that is his main path to win.
