The problem with Vasyl Lomachenko is that he’s just so good.

That would usually make him a boxing bettor’s best friend, but Lomachenko isn’t because it’s too hard to gauge exactly how he will perform on any given fight night. Sometimes he looks like a knockout machine, a fighter who is just too fast and too skilled for any opponent to handle.

Other times he’s more like a classic boxer, who uses incredible footwork, amazing speed and advanced angles to box his way to a decision victory.

But to earn a return on the kinds of one-sided bouts Lomachenko is taking these days during what is basically an inevitable march toward undisputed status in the lightweight division, a bettor really has to take a deep dive into each specific matchup and all the boxing betting odds.

Lomachenko is a huge favorite against former British champ Luke Campbell on Saturday night. Despite traveling to Campbell’s backyard to face him at the O2 Arena in London, oddsmakers such as 888Sport and playMGM tab Lomachenko the -1667 favorite over Campbell, +800.

Heck, Lomachenko could probably swim across the ocean and be something like -250 against Campbell, and that’s no knock on the British fighter. Lomachenko simply fights at a higher level than almost every other boxer in the sport. For those turned away by the large odds, check out some other bets to consider for this fight.

PICK 1: Bet Over 8.5 Rounds

Lomachenko has stopped eight of his last nine opponents, including stalwarts Guillermo Rigondeaux and Jorge Linares. But while Lomachenko is often compared to Manny Pacquiao, he doesn’t quite possess the same kind of one-punch knockout power that the popular Filipino legend did during his lightweight run. Instead, Lomachenko’s stoppages take time and come through a steady barrage of punches being thrown at his opponents from all angles. Lomachenko might stop Campbell after he’s landed enough punches, but it will take a good amount of time to do it.

PICK 2: Yes on Fight to Go The Distance

Campbell’s style is the type that could give Lomachenko fits early. Both are southpaws, but Campbell is two inches taller than Lomachenko and possess almost a seven-inch reach advantage. Moreover, Campbell’s style was specifically built around those assets, and he has fast hands and thudding power in his left. While Lomachenko’s offense has overwhelmed some, it’s important to note that this is his first bout back since suffering a knuckle injury in his last fight. While it’s obviously healed enough for him to travel across the pond to face Campbell, there’s really no telling how long it will take Lomachenko to throw his punches with the same kind of abandon he used to feel Anthony Crolla in this last fight.

PICK 3: Back Lomachenko on Points

The oddsmakers like Lomachenko by stoppage, but that might not really be the most likely outcome of the fight. Sure, Lomachenko is a huge favorite, and he has stopped better opponents than Campbell. But stylistically, Campbell is the type of fighter who will probably go the full 12 rounds with Lomachenko. In fact, Campbell resembles the last fighter to do that, Jose Pedraza. Both are good boxers with long reaches.

However, Campbell is probably a little quicker and probably even has better footwork. The trick will be whether Lomachenko can make Campbell miss enough to get inside his longer reach. Campbell’s left hand isn’t easy to gauge. It doesn’t always come in a straight line, and Campbell is quite adept at mixing the speed and power of it enough to keep most fighters from just walking right into the fray. Besides, Campbell has never been stopped, and he'll be amped up to compete in the biggest fight of his life in front of thousands of UK boxing fans.

PICK 4: Hedge Campbell by Any Method

If looking for a fun bet that could score big, or if you just want to hedge against the unfathomable, Campbell by any method at +800 is a decent play. While Lomachenko is excellent and one of the top two or three fighters in the world today, he isn’t unbeatable and somewhere in the nearish future he’ll probably be a big favorite in a fight that he will lose.

Lomachenko is built to be a perfect fighting machine. He doesn’t have the usual physical gifts that usually come with being a perennial pound-for-pound star. He’s a good athlete but not a great one the way Pacquiao is or the way someone like Roy Jones Jr was two decades ago.

Instead, Lomachenko is a fighter completely made by a rigorous training regimen. His arms are short. He’s hyper-aggressive. He basically tries to be perfect in every fight, and as great as he is at what he does, nobody can be perfect all the time.

Lomachenko already wasn’t perfect in his loss to Orlando Salido back in 2014. He wasn't perfect when Linares knocked him down last year and, eventually, he’ll run into a fighter who will capitalize on the many little mistakes that come with perfectionism.
